RYE, N.Y. – Senior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas) led all scorers with two assists as the Valiants celebrated Senior Night with a comfortable 4-1 victory over The College of the Holy Cross at Playland Ice Casino on Saturday evening in ECAC East Conference play.
Classmate Jess Scioli (North Reading, Mass./North Reading), juniors Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)) and Hannah Muskego (Neilburg, Saskatchewan/PWM Steelers (AMMFHL)), and freshman Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) all added goals for the Valiants as Manhattanville battled back to score the final four tallies on the night. Senior captain Shannon Coffey (Malden, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) finished her senior game with an assist on the game-winning goal late in the final period.
The Valiants trailed 1-0 at the 13:45 mark on a goal in the slot by Alex Campione off a pass from Nicola Garat. Less than a minute later, with a delayed penalty coming up, Nonis found Scioli on a two-on-one breakaway to tie the score, 1-1. Manhattanville took the lead for good on the subsequent man-advantage, beginning with a pass from Coffey at the half-wall to Nonis at the point, who found Solomito at the other end for a flying wrist shot over the shoulder of Crusaders' goalie Monique Gallant at 16:16.
While neither team scored in the second period, Holy Cross took advantage of a slower paced period with a few breakaway chances, but all opportunities were denied by sophomore Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College). Cote made all eight saves in the middle frame, including a late save in the crease to keep the Valiants up by one.
The Valiants added a pair of goals in the final period, beginning from the point as Muskego sent a low slapshot to the short side of Gallant to give the Valiants a 3-1 lead at the 7:36 mark. Sophomores Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) and Kelly Keane (Longmeadow, Mass./New England Falcons (EJHL)) were credited with the assists. Later in the period, the Valiants added an insurance marker as Hutchinson scored off a rebound shot by sophomore Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) to give her team a 4-1 lead. Classmate Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) was given the secondary assist after finding Occhionero in the neutral zone.
Gallant finished with 16 saves in the loss, while Cote made 23 for her ninth victory of the season.
Manhattanville (15-6-2, 12-3-1 ECAC East) will conclude the regular-season next weekend at Saint Michael's on Friday at 4 p.m., before heading over to fourth-ranked Norwich on Saturday at 1 p.m.
