Box Score Boxscore

RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team fell on Friday night by the score of 3-0 as they took on their third straight ranked opponent, the No. 3 Elmira Soaring Eagles for the second time this season.

Despite the shake-up of all four offensive lines prior to the game, the Valiants offense struggled once again to get any life in the Elmira zone all game long. Sophomore Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) had two chances early in the first period but both were stopped by the Elmira netminder Lauren Sullivan.

Elmira broke the scoreless tie with 7:49 remaining in the period in what proved to be the game-winning goal and give the Soaring Eagles the 1-0 lead. Just 93 seconds later the Soaring Eagles struck again with some quick tic-tac-toe passing to squeeze the puck between the left pad of senior goalkeeper Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) and the near side post. The goal gave Elmira a 2-0 lead, that they took into the first intermission.

During the second period Manhattanville was able to muster only two shots through the entire 20 minutes of play as Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)) got a point-blank shot off that was stoned by the Elmira keeper. The second shot came on a short-handed chance by junior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) that was also stopped. The Valiants did have five shots that were blocked before they reached the cage of Elmira in the second frame.

With the score still at 2-0 heading into the third, Manhattanville had a good opportunity to get on the board with a fresh sheet of ice and a full two-minute power play after Elmira took a penalty at the end of the second. Manhattanville mustered two shots, both of which were denied by Sullivan. After killing the penalty the momentum shifted back in favor of the Soaring Eagles and they scored off of a rebound to cap off the scoring at three goals with 15:40 to go in regulation.

Despite giving the Valiants two more power play chances and had one of their own, Elmira played keep-away and was satisfied to take away the 3-0 win back to upstate New York. At the end of the contest the Soaring Eagle had outshot their hosts by a 30-18 margin, including 8-2 in the second period.

On the power-play Manhattanville went 0-for-4 but did hold the Soaring Eagles scoreless on the man-advantage, 0-for-5. Faceoffs were also well in favor of Manhattanville as the Valiants won 34-of-53, including an 18-for-21 clip from junior Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)), classmate Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) also went 7-for-10 from the faceoff circle.

In goal, Cote made 27 saves, including a game-high 10 saves in the third period, while her record this season falls to 1-5-2. Sullivan picked up her sixth win of the season against a loss and a tie while making 18 totals saves in 60 minutes of action.

Manhattanville (4-6-2, 3-2-1 ECAC East) has to regroup get on a bus early tomorrow morning as they travel to Utica to take on the Pioneers beginning at 4 p.m. Elmira (10-1-1, 6-0-0 ECAC West) will be in action again on Wednesday, January 11 when they make their way to Clinton, New York to take on Hamilton College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
