Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity (Conn.) scored the final three goals of the game, including the game-winning tally while shorthanded midway through the third period, to deal the #13/12 Manhattanville men's hockey team a tough 3-1 defeat in a non-conference contest on Friday night at Williams Rink.
Sophomore
Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) had the lone goal of the night for Manhattanville, as his tally at the 9:51 mark of the opening frame gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. But John Hawkrigg evened the score less than five minutes later, and Trinity's Will Gray and Chris Menard added third-period tallies to give the Bantams the win.
Manhattanville ended the opening period with a 17-7 edge in total shots, but thanks to Hawkrigg's tally the two teams went into the intermission knotted up at one. Trinity came back to outshoot Manhattanville, 13-8, in the second period, but neither team found the net and the teams went into the third period still even at one apiece.
In the third frame, Manhattanville had a pair of power-play chances to take the lead, but the team's second opportunity backfired on the visitors as Gray scored an unassisted shorthanded tally at 11:13 of the period to put his team up for the first time. Rivera came right back down the ice for the Valiants and hit the pipe less than a minute later, but the team was unable to score on the chance.
The Valiants pulled sophomore
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) with 48 seconds left to get an extra attacker on the ice, but that advantage was negated by a penalty call with 16 seconds left. Even so, Manhattanville won the subsequent faceoff and senior co-captain
Brett Skalski (Exton, Pa./Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL)) had a shot on goal, but he was turned aside by Trinity netminder Benjamin Coulthard.
Trinity tacked on a needless goal with one second left to complete the scoring.
Fleming was in goal for 59:12 for Manhattanville, turning aside 32 shots, while Coulthard made 33 saves for Trinity. The Bantams held a slight 35-34 edge in shots for the evening.
Manhattanville (8-3-1) will take more than three weeks off for finals and the holiday break before continuing its eight-game road trip in Middlebury, Vt., at the Middlebury Holiday Classic on December 30-31. The team will face off with Wentworth in December 30 at 1 p.m., with the live radio call available on WMVLRadio.com.
