Volleyball Takes One of Three Matches at Roadrunner Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 MAHWAH, N.J. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team went 1-2 at the Roadrunner Invitational, hosted by Ramapo College at the Bradley Center on Saturday. The Valiants dropped their first two matches of the day to Baruch, 3-0, and Saint Joseph's (L.I.), 3-1, before rebounding to end the day with a four-set win over Gwynedd-Mercy.

As has been the case for much of the year, junior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) was the go-to person on offense for Manhattanville, as she led the team with 23 kills and 105 attacks over the 11 sets. Sophomore Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) and freshman Carly Conca (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) split the setting duties with 30 and 21 assists, respectively, and sophomore Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) led the squad with 63 digs on the day.

Manhattanville had to wait a little bit before picking up its first win of the day, but did so in its final match by coming back from a set down to secure a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 26-24) win over Gwynedd-Mercy in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Camaj again paced the team in kills with nine on 39 attempts, while also adding four service aces and 10 digs. Freshman Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) added seven kills, 10 digs and a match-high six aces of her own, while classmate Jillian Chittenden (Rye, N.Y./Rye) added five kills and a block. Defensively, Casino led all players with 28 digs.

The Valiants' second match of Saturday was another four-setter, but this time the team came up on the wrong end of a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 14-25, 25-12) score in a loss to Saint Joseph's (L.I.).

Ferreiras had the only double-double on the day for Manhattanville in a losing effort, posting 14 digs and 10 assists to go with three kills and an ace. Camaj flirted with a double-double before finishing with nine kills and eight digs, and Casino added a match-best 25 digs on defense.

The first match of the day was the most difficult going up against a potent Baruch squad, as the Valiants fell to the Bearcats by a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16) margin.

Baruch pounded out 47 kills and made only 10 errors for the match, while Manhattanville as a team managed only nine kills. Camaj had a team-leading five kills for the Valiants, while Casino again tied for the match-high with 10 digs.

Manhattanville (6-6, 1-0 Freedom) will return to Freedom Conference play on Wednesday night, as the Valiants travel to Center Valley, Pa., to take on DeSales beginning at 7 p.m.
