Aggies Dispatch Valiants in Freedom Matchup, 3-0

Freshman Patricia Alfonso tied for the team lead with five kills on Wednesday.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Delaware Valley's Janel Gluch and Gina Page combined for 21 kills as the Aggies dealt Manhattanville a 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-16) defeat in Freedom Conference women's volleyball action on Wednesday night at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Gluch and Page were two big pieces of an Aggie attack that posted 34 kills and a .284 hitting percentage on the night. Manhattanville, conversely, had just 15 kills and hit -.090 as a team against a strong Del Val defense.

In addition to Gluch and Page, Crystal Ronan added 27 assists and six digs, while Destinee Horning had eight kills and 11 digs of her own. For Manhattanville, junior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) and freshman Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) added a team-best five kills apiece, while sophomore Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) recorded a match-high 16 digs.

The first set was put away pretty quickly by the visitors, as Delaware Valley used a 10-0 run to turn a 6-4 lead into a commanding 16-4 advantage and then scored nine of the next 12 points to close out the frame. The Aggies used another big run to take control of the second set as well, scoring 18 of 21 points at one point to take a two-set lead.

Manhattanville hung with Del Val for much of the third set, but could not overcome an 8-1 run midway through the frame. The Valiants got back within four on two occasions at 17-13 and 18-14, but five straight Aggie points closed the door on the set and the match.

Manhattanville (7-10, 1-2 Freedom) will return to the court on Saturday, as the Valiants take on New Jersey City and Saint Joseph's (L.I.) in Patchogue beginning at 2 p.m.
