Valiants Sweep NJCU, Fall to St. Joseph's in Four at SJC Tri-Match

Freshman Mirusha Mujaj led the Valiants with .395 hitting on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team settled for a split on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Joseph's (L.I.) Tri-Match, defeating New Jersey City in straight sets before falling to the host Eagles by a 3-1 score at the Danzi Center.
 
The Valiants were led by the trio of junior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) and freshmen Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) and Mirusha Mujaj (Bronx, N.Y./Yorktown), as the threesome combined for 52 of the team's 56 kills on the day. Mujaj led all Valiants with 18 kills and did so on excellent .395 hitting on Saturday, while sophomore Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) was the recipient of that good hitting with 46 assists.
 
In the first match of the day, Manhattanville had little trouble dispatching the Gothic Knights in straight sets, sending NJCU to its seventh straight loss with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-23) victory.
 
Alfonso was the big hitter on offense for Manhattanville in the win, posting 11 kills on .200 hitting while also adding six digs and three service aces. Mujaj also performed well, putting down eight kills and posting a .375 hitting percentage. Ferreiras had the only Valiant double-double of the match, leading the team with 21 assists and 15 digs.

Jade Medley was the top performer offensively for the Gothic Knights, recording seven kills, while Cindy Garcia had a double-double with 19 assists and 14 digs. 

The second match of the day did not go as well, as Melissa Garbaldi and Tiffany Willms combined for 26 kills for the host school as Saint Joseph's dealt Manhattanville a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-14) defeat.
 
Garbaldi was the offensive star for the Eagles, putting down 15 kills and posting a .407 hitting percentage in the win. Willms added 11 kills and Julianne Tierney recorded 38 assists for the home team as well.
 
In a losing effort, Camaj led the team with 12 kills and Mujaj had 10 with only one error for a stellar .409 hitting percentage. Sophomore Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) led the squad defensively with 17 digs.
 
Manhattanville (8-11) will return to Freedom Conference play on Wednesday, as the Valiants travel to AVCA #19 Eastern for a 7 p.m. meeting with the nationally ranked Eagles.
