Men's Hockey Blitzed by #9/11 Hobart in Season-Opener, 5-0

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's hockey team had a rough opening game of the 2013-14 season on Friday night, as the Valiants fell to #9/11 Hobart by a 5-0 margin in an ECAC West Conference matchup at the Geneva Recreation Center.

Nick Bingaman led the Statesmen with two goals on the night, while Tommy Fiorentino, Ben Gamache and Jon Neal added single tallies for the home team. Lino Chimienti stopped all 26 shots he faced to earn the shutout win for Hobart.

The difference in the contest was special teams, as Manhattanville could not convert on eight power-play chances and managed only six shots on those eight opportunities. Hobart, meanwhile, scored twice on the man advantage and also added a shorthanded tally on the way to the win.

Manhattanville started off the game on fire, taking the first eight shots of the contest to bring a ton of momentum its way. Included in that span were three power plays and over a minute of five-on-three play in the first eight minutes, but the team could not beat Chimienti as the Statesmen managed to quell the tide. Instead it was Hobart that got the first goal of the evening on its very first shot, as Bingaman skated into the offensive zone and fired a shot over the left shoulder of senior Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)).

Manhattanville did not manage a shot after that initial outburst in the first eight minutes. And while the visitors went into the locker rooms with an 8-6 edge in shots, the momentum was clearly in favor of the home team.

The second period followed a similar unfortunate script for the Valiants. The visitors fired the first four shots on goal and had five over the first seven minutes to take back momentum somewhat, but the offense dried up after that and the squad went over 13 minutes without an on-target attempt.

Meanwhile, the power play continued to be an issue, and this time Hobart added to the woes as Bingaman earned a breakaway chance on a 4-on-3 disadvantage and beat Scola for a second time to make it 2-0 Statesmen. Then, when it looked like the teams would go into the second intermission at 2-0, Fiorentino corralled the blocked shot of Terrence O'Neill and found the net with 13 seconds left for a backbreaking third goal to make it 3-0 Hobart after 40 minutes.

Hobart added two power-play goals in the third period to complete the scoring, as Gamache and Neal tallied man-up scores.

Hobart finished the game with a slight 27-26 advantage in shots.

Manhattanville will look to rebound tomorrow night, as the Valiants make the trip south to Pine Valley to take on Elmira in an ECAC West Conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m. GoValiants.com will have live audio coverage from the Murray Athletic Center beginning at 6:45 p.m.
