Box Score ASTON, Pa. – Neumann outscored the Manhattanville men's hockey team by four goals in the second period and managed to hold on during the final 20 minutes of play in dealing the Valiants a 7-4 defeat in ECAC West Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Ice Works.
Senior
Louie Balzano (Staten Island, N.Y./New York Apple Core (EJHL)) had his second career two-goal game to lead the Valiants, while freshman
Anthony Luzzi (Branford, Conn./The Gunnery School) picked up his first collegiate goal and senior
Adam Young (Edmonton, Alta./Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL)) also found the net for the visitors. Collin O'Neil had two goals and an assist for Neumann, while Chris Bournazos and Kajon McKay added a goal and an assist each.
After both teams scored once in the first period, the game changed dramatically in the second frame, with the Knights scored four times to open up a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. O'Neil played a role in three of those tallies, scoring twice and adding an assist as the home team took a big lead.
Bournazos added a power-play goal early in the third period to make it 6-1 before Manhattanville showed a little fight, getting a pair of goals by Balzano to make it 6-3 with 5:19 remaining. After an empty-net score by Shayne Morrissey, Luzzi got the deficit back down to three with his first career tally at 19:23 of the third, but the Valiants could get no closer.
The shots were relatively even with the exception of the middle frame, when Neumann took 13 shots to Manhattanville's five. The Knights finished the day with a 39-33 edge in on-target attempts.
Junior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) suffered his first loss of the year in goal for Manhattanville, allowing five goals on 26 shots in 35:03 of action. Senior
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) came on in relief and allowed one goal on 12 shots over the final 24:57.
Manhattanville will take a break from ECAC West Conference play for the next two months, as the team's next 10 games will be against non-conference foes. The long stretch begins on Tuesday with a road matchup at Western New England set to start at 3 p.m.
