Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – Junior
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) recorded the first hat trick of his career and that was all the offense that senior netminder
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) needed as Manhattanville shut out Tufts by a 3-0 score to capture the championship of the 2013
Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
After falling to the host Spartans in the title round last year, Manhattanville (5-4-0) finished the job this season against the Jumbos, scoring twice in the first period and adding one more in the third to secure the team's first in-season tournament title since dominating Norwich's Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament in 2010-11.
Mooney was the only offense that the Valiants needed in Sunday's victory, as the junior picked up the first multi-goal game of his career and scored all three Valiant goals. With the three tallies, Mooney takes over the team lead in goals this year with five.
As a result of his career game, Mooney was one of four Valiants on the All-Tournament team. Sophomore
Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player thanks to his hat trick in yesterday's win and a four-point weekend overall, while Scola and senior defenseman
Adam Young (Edmonton, Alta./Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL)) also earned All-Tourney honors for the victors.
Manhattanville got all the offense it would need in a span of 99 seconds in the first period, when Mooney scored twice on a five-minute power play to put the Valiants ahead for good. The junior scored his first of the afternoon at the 4:24 mark off feeds from senior
Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) and freshman
Anthony Luzzi (Branford, Conn./The Gunnery School), and then came back less than 100 seconds later by putting home a Coleman feed at 6:03 of the opening frame.
While Mooney was working well on one end of the ice, Scola was impenetrable on the other end, as the senior turned aside all 28 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of his career.
Mooney put an exclamation mark on his afternoon with an unassisted empty-net score with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.
Manhattanville finished the game with a 36-28 edge in shots. Ryan Kellenberger made 33 saves on 36 shots for the Jumbos in a losing effort, while Scola improved to 3-2-0 on the year with the win.
The Valiants will return home this week for a pair of games at Terry Conners Rink, beginning with a Tuesday night matchup versus another NESCAC foe, Connecticut College, beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV starting at approximately 6:45 p.m.
