Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – Junior
Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)) had a career-high two of Manhattanville's four power-play goals to lead the Valiant men's hockey team to an easy 6-0 victory over Connecticut College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at Terry Conners Rink.
Racklin recorded his first career multi-goal game with his two-tally evening, and was one of five Valiants to find the back of the net on the night. Seniors
Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) and
Adam Young (Edmonton, Alta./Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL)) both had a goal and an assist, while junior Luke Mooney scored for the fifth time in the last three games and freshman
Adam Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Jr. Pics (EJHL)) registered his first collegiate goal as well for Manhattanville (6-4-0).
The Valiants wasted little time getting on the board against Connecticut College (0-7-0), scoring on the second shift of the night to take an early lead. Senior
Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) won a faceoff back to the point for sophomore
Nick Giuffrida (Shoreham, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)), whose shot forced Mike Petchonka to give up a rebound in front of the net that was put home by Van Natter at the 00:36 mark. For Giuffrida, the assist is the first point of his collegiate career.
The Manhattanville power play started to warm up soon after, scoring twice on two chances to take a three-goal lead into the first intermission. At the 4:07 mark, Racklin netted his first of the night with a one-timer from the slot off a Van Natter feed that made it 2-0 Valiants. Then with 1:32 remaining in the period, Mooney continued his recent hot streak by blasting a shot from the right circle past Petchonka for his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
The special teams continued to hum along in the second period, scoring twice more on three opportunities to give the team a healthy five-goal lead after 40 minutes. Young got in on the scoring action 2:23 into the frame, taking a nice back-door pass from Rivera and one-timing it into the net for his third tally of the year. Racklin added his second of the game and finished Petchonka's night with 7:06 left in the middle frame on the team's final man-up chance of the evening.
The Valiants eased up considerably in the third period, allowing Connecticut College to post a 14-7 edge in shots, and yet it was the home team that scored the only goal of the frame. Platt and Coleman came in the zone on a two-on-one rush, with the sophomore dishing off to the freshman for a wrister than beat backup netminder Tom Conlin for the score.
At the other end of the ice, senior netminder
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) was perfect for the second straight game, turning aside all 26 shots he faced for a second straight shutout. He is only the third goaltender in program history to record back-to-back shutouts, joining Sergiy Sorokolat '11 (Jan. 11 and 16, 2009) and Andrew Gallant '07 (Oct. 27-28, 2006; Jan. 20 and 26, 2007) on the exclusive list.
The Valiant penalty kill also performed well in the win, killing off all four man-down situations on the night, including 93 seconds of five-on-three early in the second period.
Manhattanville will remain at home this weekend, as the Valiants look for their third straight win over NESCAC competition when they take on Trinity (Conn.) at Terry Conners Rink on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at 7:15 p.m.
