Box Score ASTON, Pa. – Third-seeded Neumann scored three times in the third period and Tournament MVP Braely Torris turned aside all 22 shots he faced as the #12/10 Knights denied fourth-seeded and #14/14 Manhattanville a fifth ECAC West Tournament championship with a 3-0 victory on Saturday night in the title game at Ice Works.
Manhattanville had its chances all game long against Torris, but could not sneak a puck by the sophomore netminder over the course of 60 minutes. Neumann had the same struggles at the other end against sophomore
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) for the first two periods, but scored three goals in the final frame to emerge with the win.
After more than 40 minutes of scoreless play in which both teams had numerous chances but could not score, Steve Gervais finally broke the ice 6:12 into the third period when he took a feed from Scott Elkow at the top of the circle and stuffed it past Scola. Both teams continued to have chances after that goal, but neither side could find the net until Casey Rogers' shot from the blue line gave the home team a two-goal edge with 4:32 remaining.
The Valiants went into full desperation mode after that, pulling Scola with two minutes to go and generating several good scoring opportunities, and yet nothing could find its way past Torris. With the Valiants on a six-on-four power play in the final minute, Jake Kratz scored an empty-net shorthanded tally to account for the final score.
Neumann finished the night with a 31-22 edge in shots. Scola turned aside the first 20 shots he faced and finished the game with 28 stops overall.
Scola along with classmate
Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)) and senior
Brendan Turner (Tisdale, Sask./Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL)) were named to the All-Tournament Team representing Manhattanville. They joined Neumann's Gervais, Scott Farrell and Harley Garrioch along with Torris with All-Tournament honors.
Saturday's game marks the final game in the collegiate careers of Manhattanville's six seniors: Turner,
Jason Bowles (Elkhorn, Man./Waywayseecappo Wolverines (MJHL)),
Scott Hudson (St. Albert, Alta./Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL)),
Ron Smith (North Delta, B.C./Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL)),
Brett Skalski (Exton, Pa./Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL)) and
Marc Zanoni (Lethbridge, Alta./Calgary Canucks (AJHL)).
Manhattanville has its season come to a close with a 15-10-3 record, while Neumann improves to 19-6-3 and will have to wait and see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, which starts next week.
