Valiants Cruise Past Bard and Rosemont at Home Tri-Match

Senior Susy Camaj had 13 kills, 11 aces, and no attack errors to lead the Valiants on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball hosted its annual home tri-match on Saturday at Kennedy Gym and encountered little resistance in improving its record to 3-0 to start the year, as the Valiants impressively swept away Bard, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13,25-17), and Rosemont, 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-12).

Senior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) did not commit an error in leading a well balanced Valiant offensive attack, recording 13 kills and a .542 hitting percentage while also chipping in 11 service aces and 17 digs to lead the squad. Junior Jillian Chittenden (Rye, N.Y./Rye) hit .370 and recorded 12 kills on the day, followed close behind by freshman Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) with 10 kills and .360 hitting.

Manhattanville (3-0) as a team posted 64 kills and made only 19 errors in 155 attempts, good for a .290 team hitting percentage. The Valiants also held their opponents to a combined -.076 hitting percentage and took advantage of them to the tune of 29 service aces.

In the first match of the day, Manhattanville had little trouble with Bard, posting 32 kills and hitting .273 as a team in the straight-set win.

Camaj had a near-perfect match in the opening contest of the day, posting 10 kills without an error in 17 attempts (.588), while Chittenden added seven kills and Primavera had six. Freshman Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) tied for the match-high with 14 assists and junior Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) dug out a team-best 11 balls as well.

Sophomore Rebecca Speckenbach led Bard offensively with six kills, while junior Lexi Cooper tied Quinabo for the match lead with 14 assists and freshman Daniella Azulai led all players with 16 digs.

The first set was close early, but the Valiants used an 11-2 run following a timeout to open up a decisive lead and take control for good. The Valiants did not make the same mistake in the second set, scoring seven of the first nine points. The Raptors never got back within four points after the early Valiant run, as the home team cruised to a two-set lead.

Bard actually held a lead for the beginning of the third frame, taking a 14-12 advantage after a kill from sophomore Tiffany Leung. But a Speckenback service error and five straight points on Quinabo's serve put the home team back ahead at 18-14, and Manhattanville scored seven of the match's final 10 points to close out the match in three sets.

The final match of the afternoon did not feature the same level of tension, as Manhattanville posted 32 kills and 20 service aces in handing Rosemont a 3-0 loss in less than an hour.

Playing her first match of the year, senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) was impressive with a team-leading eight kills and adding six digs, while Chittenden added five kills and both Primavera and junior Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) chipped in four without an error. Camaj just missed an unconventional double-double with nine digs and 11 service aces, the latter of which tied her for third on the school's single-match list. Quinabo also added 16 assists and seven aces as well.

The match started auspiciously for the Valiants against the Ravens, as Camaj picked up a kill on the first point and then won 11 straight points on her serve (including four aces and two more kills of her own) to open up a 12-0 lead that the squad never came close to relinquishing.

Manhattanville was even more dominating in the second set, ceding just four points overall and hitting .476 as a team. Quinabo started the squad on a 6-0 run that included two aces by her in addition to two kills each from Chittenden and Primavera. After a service error made it 12-4 Valiants, Camaj again dominated from the service line, using six aces as part of a 13-0 run that closed out the frame.

Rosemont took its first lead of the match by winning the first two points of the third set, but Manhattanville came right back with 11 straight points and 20 of the next 22 to quickly correct that.  Camaj had another long run of success from the line during the run, and for the match won an amazing 33 of 35 points on her serve.

Manhattanville will continue its season-opening homestand on Wednesday night, as the Valiants host Merchant Marine for a 7 p.m. matchup that will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV.
