Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) had a good afternoon with 42 assists, 10 digs and eight aces, while junior

Manhattanville had little trouble with Maritime in the first match of the day, cruising to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-8) win thanks to an offense that posted 31 kills with only eight errors (.329 hitting). Primavera posted nine kills to lead all players, followed close behind by Camaj with eight kills and five aces. Casino had seven aces and a team-best five digs as well.
The first set was close early on, as the score was knotted at seven after an ace by Primavera, but Manhattanville took control after that, going on a 15-2 run to pick up the first-set win. The second set saw the Valiants jump out to an 11-2 lead and never look back thanks to four straight aces from Camaj, giving the squad a two-set advantage.
The final set followed a similar pattern, as five straight points on Quinabo's serve gave Manhattanville an early 6-0 lead and the Valiants were never threatened after that. A 16-2 run closed out the match, finished off by eight straight points on the serve of Casino.
Manhattanville had a little harder time in its second match against the host Gryphons, but the Valiants got 10 kills each from Primavera and Taylor and a near-record 13 aces from Camaj to take down Sarah Lawrence, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-15).
Camaj's 13 aces were one off the program record of 14, achieved by Jamie Kriksciun '99 on September 16, 1996 against the same Sarah Lawrence squad.
The first set was a battle between the two sides in their second meeting of the year, as the Gryphons jumped out to an early lead and held a three-point edge at 17-14. But a Sarah Lawrence service error allowed Camaj to step to the service line down by two, and she followed with six aces interspersed between Taylor and Primavera kills that made it 23-17 Valiants. Kills by Primavera and Quinabo followed soon after to give Manhattanville the first set.
Manhattanville made sure there was less drama in the second stanza, as the visitors jumped out to a 9-1 lead thanks to a personal 7-0 run by Camaj that included a kill followed by six straight aces. The final stanza of the day was back-and-forth to start, but the Valiants closed things out with a 12-5 run that gave them another straight-set victory.
Manhattanville will be back for day two of the Sarah Lawrence Invitational tomorrow, as the Valiants take on King's (N.Y.) at 11 a.m. and New Jersey City at 1 p.m.
