Valiants Earn Sarah Lawrence Invitational Championship with Two More Wins

The Valiants celebrating their Sarah Lawrence Invitational championship on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) earned Most Valuable Player honors and freshman Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as Manhattanville beat King's (N.Y.), 3-0, and New Jersey City, 3-1, on Sunday to take the championship of the Sarah Lawrence Invitational this weekend.

Manhattanville was the only team to emerge undefeated from the two-day invitational, losing only one set thanks to an offense that hit .245 as a team and recorded 69 service aces. Camaj led the way with 34 kills, 27 aces and 34 digs over 13 sets, while Primavera easily led all players with 52 kills over four matches.

Primavera was the team's offensive leader on day two just as she was on day one, hitting .287 with 33 kills. Camaj had 21 kills, 28 digs and nine aces in another all-around effort, while freshman Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) posted two big assist totals and ended the day with 67 helpers.

In the first match of the day, Primavera nearly single-handedly recorded more kills than the entire King's (N.Y.) roster in leading the Valiants to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 26-24) victory.

Primavera posted 17 kills for Manhattanville, compared to 18 for the entire King's squad, and did so with only two errors for a very efficient .469 hitting percentage. Camaj came one kill short of a double-double with nine kills and 16 digs, while Quinabo did record a double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs. Senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) and junior Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) both reached double figures as well in digs, with Taylor digging out 11 and Casino picking up 10.

After picking up a 25-17 win in the first set, Manhattanville was dominant in the middle frame, putting down 17 kills with only one error in cruising to a 25-10 win. Primavera out-killed King's in the frame, 7-4, to help the Valiants to a two-set lead. The third set had to go slightly past the normal 25 points, but thanks to eight more kills from Primavera the Valiants were able to pull out the win.

To finish the day, Manhattanville met New Jersey City in a de facto championship game between two unbeaten teams, and the Valiants overcame a tough first set to post a 3-1 (29-31, 25-22, 25-22, 25-16) victory to finish the weekend at 4-0.

Primavera again led the Valiant attack, putting down 16 more kills, followed by Taylor with 13 kills and Camaj with a solid overall stat line of 12 kills, 12 digs and six aces. Quinabo set a season-high in assists for the second straight match with 35 and also chipped in 15 digs.

The first set was a marathon affair, needing 60 points to decide a winner. It didn't look like that would be necessary early on, as Manhattanville jumped out to a 15-3 lead thanks to eight straight on the serve of Taylor. The Valiants were still up comfortably, 20-12, but NJCU went on a 10-2 run to even the score at 22. Manhattanville had five set points but could not convert on any of them, eventually resulting in three straight Gothic Knight points that gave them the opening set.

The script started similarly for Manhattanville in the second set, as the team scored 13 of the first 17 points to take an early lead. After holding off their opponents for much of the period, the Valiants again had trouble closing out the set, squandering three set points before NJCU got it done for them with a ball handling error that evened the match at one.

The crucial third set was by far the most even up to that point, as neither team earned a lead of more than three points for most of the frame. Knotted up at 12, Manhattanville picked up four straight points to open up the largest lead of the set at 16-12 and the margin got back up to four again at 20-16 on a Camaj ace, but NJCU went on a quick 6-1 run to take a 22-21 lead. However, two Gothic Knight errors and a big ace by junior Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) brought up set point, and Primavera put down her 13th kill of the match to give the Valiants a one-set lead.

Looking to close things out, Manhattanville jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set thanks to four NJCU errors and a pair of Camaj aces. Up by three at 15-12, the Valiants used three Primavera kills to go on a 6-0 run that gave the squad some breathing room and allowed the team to clinch the match and the tournament title.

Manhattanville will look to keep the momentum going as it returns to Freedom Conference play on Wednesday, as the Valiants take to the Kennedy Gym court for the first time in nearly three weeks against Wilkes beginning at 7 p.m. The match will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at 6:55 p.m.
