Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Despite a match-high 13 kills from senior
Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook), the Manhattanville women's volleyball team could not take advantage of its opportunities and dropped a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-17) decision to Wilkes in Freedom Conference action on Tuesday night at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Camaj and freshman
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) both had double-doubles to lead the Valiant attack. Camaj, who was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, led all players with 13 kills and also added 10 digs and a pair of blocks. Quinabo picked up the assist on 27 of the team's 33 kills, and also chipped in 11 digs. Freshman
Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) added 11 kills and junior
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) had a team-best 12 digs as well for Manhattanville (11-6, 0-2 Freedom).
Ally Paskas had the only double-double for Wilkes (5-7, 2-0 Freedom), recording 10 kills and 13 digs. Casey Bohan chipped in a team-leading 11 kills and Marissa Mallory dug out a match-high 28 balls for the visitors as well.
Hitting accuracy was the big difference in the match on Tuesday, as Wilkes put down 41 kills with only 11 errors (.252 hitting) while Manhattanville had 21 errors to go with 33 kills (.097 hitting).
The first set was easily the closest between the two sides, as they needed more than 25 points to decide a winner. Wilkes jumped to an eight-point lead early on at 11-3 and the visitors were still comfortably ahead up six at 19-13 before the Valiants made a run, scoring six straight points on the serve of junior
Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) after a Colonel service error to take a 20-19 lead. Manhattanville had a set point at 24-23 but the home team could not convert, and a kill from Kelsey Yacko and a Valiant attack error allowed the Lady Colonels to squeak out the all-important first set.
Manhattanville scored six of the first eight points in the middle stanza, but the momentum swung Wilkes' way thanks to a 9-2 run that put the visitors ahead by an 11-8 score. The Valiants got back within one on three occasions but could never get over the hump, as Wilkes took a two-sets-to-none lead.
Wilkes again got off to a good start in the third set on Bohan's serve, scoring five straight points to take an 8-4 lead. The Valiants were unable to string together any runs to get back into the contest, as the squad managed back-to-back points only four times the rest of the way.
Manhattanville, which has its season-high four-match winning streak snapped with the loss, will look to get back on track this Saturday when it hosts Rutgers-Newark, Saint Elizabeth and New Rochelle for a quad-match at Kennedy Gym. The Valiants and Scarlet Raiders kick things off at 11 a.m., while Manhattanville and Saint Elizabeth will close out the day at 5 p.m. Both Valiant matches will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV.
