Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Manhattanville scored the first goal of the game and held a one-goal lead after one period, but #12/12 Williams scored four unanswered goals over the final 40 minutes to deal the Valiant men's hockey team a 4-1 defeat in non-conference action on Friday night at Lansing Chapman Rink.
Senior assistant captain
Adam Young (Edmonton, Alta./Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL)) got that first goal of the game at the 3:36 mark for Manhattanville (9-6-0), which entered the evening a perfect 8-0-0 when scoring the game's first goal. At the very end of the Valiants' first man-up chance of the night, the blueliner managed to beat Ephs netminder Sean Dougherty for his fifth goal of the year, with classmate
Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) and junior
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) picking up the assists.
Despite taking only four on-target shots in the opening period, the Valiants went into the first intermission with a lead. The squad entered the night a perfect nine-for-nine this year when leading at the end of one period, but it was not to be on this evening as the Ephs scored the game's final four tallies.
After the Valiants killed off Williams' first two penalties of the night, the home team got on the board at the midway point of the middle frame while on the man advantage, with George Hunkele putting home his seventh of the year to even the score. Williams doubled up Manhattanville in shots (12-6) in the period, but the teams still went into the third period knotted at one apiece.
Manhattanville out-shot Williams, 12-7, in the third period, and yet the home team scored three unanswered goals to pull out the win. Greg Johnson scored the eventual game-winning goal at 6:57 of the period, followed less than two minutes later by Nick Anderson's four-on-four goal that gave the Ephs a two-goal cushion. Matt Doyle secured the win with a power-play goal with 5:52 remaining in the contest.
Williams (9-2-2) finished the evening with a 28-22 edge in shots. Dougherty made 21 saves to earn his eighth victory of the year, while junior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) returned from injury to make his first start since November 30, stopping 24 shots in a losing effort.
Manhattanville will make the trip west to Morrisville State, where the Valiants and Mustangs will battle tomorrow night beginning at 7 p.m.
