Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – It was a frustrating evening for the Manhattanville men's hockey team on Saturday night, as the Valiants had trouble generating offense all night long in a disappointing 5-1 loss to Hobart in an ECAC West Conference clash at Terry Conners Rink.
Manhattanville (10-8-0, 3-5-0 ECAC West) mustered only 14 shots on goal over the 60 minutes, with only the third-period attempt of senior
Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) able to beat Hobart netminder Lino Chimienti.
Hobart (10-4-4, 4-1-3 ECAC West), meanwhile, had little trouble offensively in extending its winning streak to eight games, scoring three times in the first period and twice more in the third. Ben Gamache had two goals and an assist, matched for the game-high in points by Terrence O'Neill with three helpers, while three other Hobart skaters also found the net on the night.
One day removed from a lackluster opening period that put the home team behind early, Manhattanville followed the same unfortunate script on Saturday night, as the home team was out-shot 13-3 in the first period and allowed three goals. All three tallies came on special teams, beginning with a Gamache power-play tally at the 10:10 mark. Mac Olson made it 2-0 with a shorthanded score at 16:18, followed less than three minutes later by a Nick Bingaman man-up score.
The Valiants managed to settle down the game in the second period, with neither team finding the net. Manhattanville seemed to be gaining some momentum early in the third period when Van Natter converted on a five-on-three power play for his ninth goal of the year, but the Valiants could not convert on the subsequent five-on-four and Hobart came back with two goals 45 seconds apart to take a four-goal lead that would not be challenged.
Hobart finished the night with a 31-14 edge in shots and went 3 for 7 on the man advantage, while the Valiants were successful on 1 of 7 man-up chances. Chimienti made 13 saves to earn the win for the visitors, while senior
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) didn't receive much support in front of him and turned aside 26 attempts for the home team.
Manhattanville will look to rebound on Friday night, when the Valiants continue conference play with a pivotal matchup against Neumann at Terry Conners Rink beginning at 7 p.m.
