Van Natter and Coleman Help Men's Hockey Skate to a 2-2 Draw with Neumann

Senior Luc Van Natter had a hand in both Valiant goals on Friday night.
Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) scored the game-tying goal with 9:08 remaining in regulation and senior Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) had a two-point night as the Manhattanville men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Neumann in ECAC West Conference action on Friday night at Terry Conners Rink.

The tie keeps Manhattanville (10-8-1, 3-5-1 ECAC West) one point ahead of Neumann (7-8-4, 2-5-2 ECAC West) for fourth place in the conference standings with five games remaining, while also nullifying any potential tiebreakers between the two schools thanks to a 1-1-1 season series.

Van Natter was involved in both Manhattanville goals on the night, evening the score at one with his 10th goal of the year and then putting a shot on goal that left a rebound for Coleman to convert for the eventual game-tying tally. With his two points, Van Natter moves into a tie for 10th place in career scoring at Manhattanville, matching the 80 points of Tyler Resch '06. Johannes Sallila and Shayne Morrissey had the goals for Neumann in the contest.

After an uneventful first period that saw neither a penalty nor a goal, Sallila opened the scoring 5:35 into the second frame with his second of the year, gathering a puck on the doorstep and lifting it past senior netminder Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)). Van Natter responded at the 12:21 mark, as he and junior Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) worked hard to pry a puck loose in front of the Knights' cage before the senior managed to poke it past Braely Torris for the score.

Morrissey put his team ahead for the second time at the midway point of the third period, but it look Manhattanville less than a minute to respond this time. Van Natter poked the puck loose in the defensive zone and earned a two-on-one rush with Coleman; while his initial shot was stopped by Torris, Coleman was there to bang home the rebound to even the score again.

Neither team found the net the rest of the way, although Manhattanville had some tense moments thanks to a penalty in overtime that forced the Valiants to spend the final 1:42 down a man.

The Valiants finished the night with a 37-30 edge in shots, with Scola turning aside 28 shots and Torris making 35 saves. The penalty kill was effective for both teams on the night, with Manhattanville scoreless on four man-up chances and Neumann 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

Manhattanville will return to action next weekend, when the Valiants make the long trip to Rochester to take on a red-hot Nazareth squad for two crucial ECAC West Conference games beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m.
