DeMartino Helps Women's Hockey Tame the Mustangs, 4-0

Cold? Not DeMartino, her red-hot performance left the Mustangs on ice.
Box Score REISTERTOWN, Md. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team was able to reach the .500 mark for the New Year with a 4-0 win over the Mustangs of Stevenson University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Rachel Morrison led all skaters with a game-high two points on a goal and an assist, while classmates Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)) and Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) as well as freshman Taryn Harris (Morrison, Colo./Colorado Selects) also found the net for Manhattanville in the win.

At the other end of the ice, freshman goaltender Dana DeMartino (Massapequa Park, N.Y. /Massapequa ) was tremendous between the pipes for the Valiants, turning away all 22 shots on the day and recording the first shutout of her collegiate career.

Although the weather was cold outside, the action in the rink was scorching hot as these teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first period. The only separation came with 21 seconds remaining as Meggiolaro was able to stuff home a loose puck in front of the net to give the Valiants a huge short-handed goal and a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

After finishing the first period being outshot 9-6, Manhattanville evened the mark in the second, outshooting Stevenson by a total of 10-8 in the period.  Both goaltenders played in good form in the second period and the score stayed 1-0 heading into the third.

The third period started out quickly for the Valiants and saw the squad really take control of the tempo, momentum, and the game.  The Valiants quickly increased their lead to 2-0 on the power play with a beautiful deflection from Traun, coming off the shot from the point by classmate Trennah Stauffer only 57 seconds into the period.

The Valiants continuously applied pressure with a quick breakout, attacking Stevenson where they were most vulnerable.  At the halfway point of the third period, Harris picked up her second goal of the season, gathering a rebound off a shot from sophomore forward Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon) and finding the back of the net, giving the Valiants an insurmountable lead. Morrison closed out the scoring at the 17:33 mark when the puck she threw at the net bounced off the skate of a Stevenson defender and over the shoulder of Stevenson goaltender Mackenzie Bruch, making the game 4-0.

Manhattanville (6-5-1) got the win they needed as they head to upstate New York this weekend to face-off against two very good opponents, beginning with a Saturday clash with consensus #1 Plattsburgh State beginning at 3 p.m.
