Men's Hockey Drops Second Straight to Neumann, 4-3 in Overtime

ASTON, Pa. – Neumann University's Mike Davis scored the game-winning goal 3:31 into overtime as the Knights overcame a late Valiant comeback to complete a weekend sweep with a 4-3 (OT) victory over the Manhattanville College men's hockey team in an ECAC West Conference contest on Saturday night at Ice Works.

Senior Eric McClure (Mitchell, Ont./Thorold Blackhawks (OJHL)), sophomore Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) and freshman Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) all scored for Manhattanville (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ECAC West) in the back-and-forth contest, which saw the Valiants go up by two goals early only to need a late goal to send the game to overtime.

Things looked good for the Valiants at the midway point of regulation, as the visitors had built up a 2-0 lead on the strength of Gaul and Marshall tallies. Gaul struck first at 7:34 of the first period by potting his second of the year on the power play, followed by Marshall's first of the season at 10:58 of the middle stanza.

Unfortunately that was Manhattanville's final shot of the middle frame, while Neumann (3-1-1, 3-1-0 ECAC West) peppered senior Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) at the other end with 18 shots. Fleming turned aside 17 of those attempts, but the one that got through off the stick of Ryan Luiten made it a 2-1 gave after 40 minutes.

Luiten scored again 6:29 into the third period to even the score, and Steve Low added his team's third straight goal with one of his own with just 2:27 remaining in regulation and the teams skating four-on-four to put the Knights ahead for the first time.

However, the Valiants did not go quietly, as McClure scored less than a minute later to knot the score at three before Manhattanville even had the chance to pull the goalie for an extra attacker. Gaul and senior assistant captain Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) assisted on the goal, McClure's first of the season.

Both goalies made two saves in overtime before Davis won it 3:31 into the extra frame with his first goal of the game.

Fleming had another good game for Manhattanville despite the loss, turning aside 38 shots in 63:31 of action. Ben Curley earned a second straight win for Neumann by making 20 saves on 23 shots.

Manhattanville will continue conference play next Friday, when the squad travels north to Nazareth for an ECAC West matchup with the Golden Flyers beginning at 7 p.m.
