Women’s Basketball Bounces On Kangaroos In 79-54 Win

AMHERST, Mass.- Led by 21-point performances from both senior Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) and junior Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) on Monday night, the Manhattanville women's basketball team took down SUNY Canton by a final score of 79-54 at the Amherst Holiday Classic.

Manhattanville (6-3) had four players finish in double-figures, outscoring SUNY Canton (0-7) by 28 points inside the paint while also manufacturing 36 points off turnovers. To go with a game-high 21 points, Caiazzo also tallied 16 rebounds en route to her eighth double-double of the season.

With the 16 rebounds, Caiazzo is now second on the Manhattanville women's basketball all-time rebounds list with 953 total, moving past Sue Gols '83. After scoring 21 points, the senior now only needs eight points to become the 13th Valiant to reach 1,000 points.

The Valiants jumped out early on the Kangaroos, scoring the first seven points of the game in the opening two minutes of play. The stifling defense of Manhattanville continued to cause issues for SUNY Canton, forcing turnovers to help lead the Valiants to an 11-2 lead after five minutes of play. Manhattanville would never look back in the contest as the Valiants did not trail once.

Defensive pressure from Manhattanville heckled the Kangaroos all night, providing more offensive opportunities, making it difficult for SUNY Canton to mount a comeback. With the effective play of Caiazzo and Franklin inside the paint, senior Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) and junior Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) were able to space the floor, leading Manhattanville to a 46-24 lead at halftime. In the contest, Pabon and Raaf each finished with 10 points.

The defense from the Valiants picked up in the second half, continuing to force turnovers that led to easy looks at the basket. The Kangaroos turned the ball over 36 times compared to 16 turnovers from Manhattanville. The closest SUNY Canton could come to the Valiants in the second half was an 18-point deficit before Manhattanville took down the Kangaroos by 25, 79-54.

The Valiants will take on D3hoops.com #3 undefeated Amherst tomorrow at 2 p.m. Live video can be accessed via GoValiants.com.
