Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) became the 13th Valiant to score 1,000 points for Manhattanville women's basketball on Tuesday afternoon, tallying 17 points to go with 16 rebounds in a 81-62 loss to #4/3 Amherst at the Amherst Holiday Classic.
Helping Caiazzo in the losing effort was classmate
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington), scoring a game-high 24 points for Manhattanville (6-4). #4/3 Amherst (9-0) had four players finish in double-figures, helping the Jeffs remain unbeaten on the season. The Jeffs' bench also outscored Manhattanville's bench 35-5 in the contest, proving to be a major advantage for Amherst.
Manhattanville was slow to start, falling to a 10-2 deficit just three minutes in before gathering offensive rhythm. With Pabon knocking down shots early, the Valiants were able to chip away at the Jeffs' lead, pulling within three points at the 12:07 mark, 16-13. After trailing 20-13 with under 11 minutes left in the first half, the Valiants went on an 8-0 run, taking a 21-20 lead over Amherst with 8:46 to go until halftime.
Trailing by one, the Jeffs were quick to answer, bouncing out on a 15-3 run to control a 35-24 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. The Valiants continued to try and chip away at the double-digit deficit for the remainder of the half, but the Jeffs ended up holding a 47-36 lead at the half.
Manhattanville started its comeback in the second half, pulling within seven after a layup from junior
Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) inside the paint with 15:38 remaining. After the made basket from Raaf, the Jeffs went on an 8-0 run to put their lead at 15, 59-44. The closest the Valiants would come to the Jeffs for the remainder of the contest was 13 points at the 12:37 mark. The depth of Amherst proved to be an issue for Manhatanville as the third-ranked Jeffs remained unbeaten with an 81-62 win over the Valiants.
The Valiants will return home on Saturday when they take on non-conference opponent SUNY Old Westbury at 1 p.m. Both live video and live stats are available via GoValiants.com.
