Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nazareth forward Scott Andler scored two goals and netminder Ed Zdolshek turned aside 30 of 31 Valiant shots as the Manhattanville men's hockey team fell to the Golden Flyers by a 3-1 score in ECAC West Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Coming into the game with two goals all season, Andler led the home team to a win with a pair of scores, while Chris Murray also found the net for Nazareth (7-14-1, 3-8-1 ECAC West). Junior
Kevin Struempfler (Lincoln University, Pa./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) had the lone goal of the game for Manhattanville (11-9-1, 4-6-1 ECAC West), which, despite the weekend split, will still finish the weekend in fourth place in the conference with four games left in the regular season.
For the second straight game, Nazareth was able to jump out to an early lead, as Andler netted his first at the 5:42 mark to put the home team ahead. But again the Valiants responded before the first intermission, with Struempfler scoring for the second time this season off a feed from senior co-captain
Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) at 13:35 to even the score after one period.
After a scoreless middle frame, Nazareth scored twice in 90 seconds in the third period to take the lead back for good. Andler's second of the night came at 6:04 to give Nazareth a 2-1 lead, and Murray followed soon after with his fifth goal of the year to give the home team a two-goal margin that Manhattanville was unable to overcome.
Manhattanville outshot Nazareth in all three periods, finishing the game with a 31-18 edge in shots, but Zdolshek had a good game in net for the home team with his 30 stops. Senior netminder
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) made 15 saves on 18 attempts for the Valiants.
The Valiants will play their final two games of the regular season on home ice next weekend, as Manhattanville hosts Elmira for two very important ECAC West contests at Terry Conners Rink beginning on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at approximately 7:15 p.m.
