PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) recorded her first career hat trick and Manhattanville College exploded for a season-high six goals as the Valiants defeated John Jay College by the score of 6-0 in non-conference women's soccer action on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
DeMarco was the story of the match for Manhattanville (2-7-0), posting the third multi-goal game of her career. The junior scored her three goals on a very efficient five shots before spending the latter portion of the game toward the back line, doubling her season goal output in the process.
Senior
Sara Auld (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) and junior
Nicolette Diodati (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) both registered their first collegiate goals in the victory, while sophomore
Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) also returned to the lineup with her first goal of the season as well. Manhattanville completely dominated play on the afternoon, finishing with a 28-4 edge in shots and a 16-3 advantage in shots on target.
It did not take long for DeMarco and the Valiants to get on the board against the Bloodhounds, with the junior breaking the ice in the second minute. After a long ball forward, DeMarco took the ball from the John Jay defense and fired a quick shot from the top of the 18 that beat keeper Andrea Antoni at the 1:55 mark.
The Valiant lead doubled in the 20th minute thanks to some nice passing, as freshman
Zoew McGrath (New York, N.Y./Saint Vincent Ferrer) poked a ball down the near side for Diodati, who tapped it past the onrushing Antoni for DeMarco to slot into an empty net. Just over four minutes later it was Diodati's turn to do the scoring, taking a long outlet from junior
Dani Sullivan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and going in alone down the right wing before beating Antoni short side.
Durkin added one more to the scoreboard before the half with a great individual effort in the 40th minute. The sophomore took the ball 40 yards from goal on the far wing, leaving behind three John Jay defenders before getting to the endline and picking the far corner for her first goal of the year.
Manhattanville eased up considerably in the second half, but still managed to put two more balls in the back of the net. DeMarco completed her hat trick in the 56th minute, as junior
Carolina Pelaez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) played a ball behind the defense for her classmate to put away. Auld got in on the action in the 84th minute, as she headed home the rebound of a shot from classmate
Erika Deetjen (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) for the first goal of her Valiant career.
Sophomore
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) did not have much action on the other end of the field, but was still credited with three saves as she picked up her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career. Antoni made five saves on 10 shots before being sent off for a handball in the 60th minute, and Katelyn Davis moved back from defense to admirably stop four of the five shots she faced the rest of the way.
Manhattanville has one final test before conference play begins next weekend, coming on Wednesday when the Valiants travel to Long Island to take on Farmingdale State College beginning at 4 p.m.
