Volleyball Suffers First Loss of 2014 with Straight-Set Defeat at New Rochelle

Sophomore Alissa Primavera led the Valiants in kills for the second straight match with a team-best 15.
Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2014 season on Wednesday night, as the Valiants came up short in a 3-0 (26-16, 25-22, 31-29) defeat to the College of New Rochelle in non-conference action at the CNR Gymnasium.

At times the match felt like an individual battle between New Rochelle's Fabiola Padilla Rios and Manhattanville sophomore Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), who were the only two players to reach double figures on the night. Padilla Rios led all players with 19 kills and also added 14 digs and five service aces, while Primavera finished with 15 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) also had a double-double for Manhattanville (3-1), finishing with a match-high 23 assists and 12 digs.

The first set started out evenly with the two teams splitting the first six points of the night, but New Rochelle (2-3) followed with a quick 6-0 run helped by two Padilla Rios kills and two Valiant errors. The Valiants got within three points on a pair of occasions but got no closer, as the Blue Angels comfortably took the first set

The two evenly matched teams matched each other point for point to start the middle frame, as the score was knotted nine times before either side reached double figures. CNR scored 10 of the next 15 points to break the 9-9 tie and take a 19-14 lead, but the visitors clawed back to even the score at 20 on a Primavera put down. However, three Valiant attack errors and two Padilla Rios kills allowed New Rochelle to take the set and a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Manhattanville jumped out to an 8-4 lead but fell behind following a 6-1 CNR run, but head coach Amanda Alayon called a timeout and her squad responded with six straight points to regain the lead at 15-10. The Valiant lead was four at 19-15 after a kill by freshman Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) before five straight New Rochelle points put the Blue Angels back on top. After Primavera stopped the run with a kill, four of the next five points went to the home team to take a 24-21 lead. The Valiants staved off three match points thanks to a trio of CNR attack errors, and then survived two more thanks to a pair of Primavera kills. Manhattanville also had three set points of its own but lost them all due to errors, which came back to haunt the Valiants after a Padilla Rios kill and a Tiany Perez Diaz ace that ended the match.

Manhattanville hit .064 for the match, countering its 29 kills with 21 errors and eight service miscues. New Rochelle hit at a .109 clip for the night, posting 35 kills to go with 21 errors.

The Valiants will look to shake off the loss this weekend at Saturday's William Paterson Tri-Match, beginning with a noon date with the host Pioneers followed by a 2 p.m. matchup with Brooklyn.
