Jordan Daniel Scores Game-Winner in 2OT as Men's Soccer Upends Merchant Marine

KING'S POINT, N.Y. – Late-game heroics from sophomore Jordan Daniel (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) propelled the Manhattanville College men's soccer team to a 2-1 (2ot) victory over the Mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday night. Daniel's goal, his third of the season, came in the 107th minute of play.

The Valiants took control of the game from the opening whistle, recording the first three shots of the game. The third shot of the game came off a free kick from sophomore Eddy Garcia in the 15th minute. Garcia served a ball into the middle of the box which was headed into goal by freshman defender Christoffer Staahl (Lulea, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln), the first goal of the Swedish native's collegiate career.

The teams traded opportunities and the Valiants almost extended their lead in the 29 minute when senior Alem Pelinkovic (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) struck the crossbar with his shot towards goal. Shortly thereafter, Merchant Marine got on the board as junior Dan Weldon placed an excellent shot from the left sideline that he bent into the far left corner, tying the game 1-1 in the 38th minute.

Both teams had great chances late in regulation, but the opposing goalkeepers both came up huge to keep their teams in the contest. Junior Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made a big diving stop on Tim Hughes in the 84th minute to keep the score tied at one, and Merchant Marine's Cory Maier turned aside sophomore Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) on a breakaway opportunity with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Despite opportunities such as these, it was nearly 70 minutes before Daniel put in the game-winning goal off a well-played pass from Macchia. The assist marks the third time this season that Macchia has either assisted on or scored the game-winning goal for the Valiants.

Thanks in part to his late-game stop, Singson picked up the win by registering six saves on the night in putting together a solid performance.

Coach Miller noted how important a win like this can be for his team going forward. "We battled well again today," Miller said. "This is a very difficult place to come to, so to come away with a win is pleasing. This performance tonight showed that we have underachieved so far this season and we need to build off this and add some consistency."

The Valiants return home this Saturday for their first Freedom Conference matchup of the season when the Delaware Valley Aggies visit GoValiants.com Field. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
