Waugh Nets a Hat Trick as Men's Hockey Skates Past Wentworth, 4-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore assistant captain Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)) recorded his first career hat trick to lead the Manhattanville College men's hockey team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Sunday night at Walter Brown Arena.

Waugh was the star of the game for Manhattanville (6-5-3), posting the 31st hat trick in program history to give him a team-leading seven goals on the year. The sophomore single-handedly led the Valiants to the win, scoring the go-ahead goal late in the second period before adding a pair of insurance tallies in the final frame.

Freshman Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) also scored for Manhattanville in the win, with his six goals and 11 points on the season now tops among ECAC West Conference rookies. Junior Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) also chipped in a pair of assists for the visitors.

After a scoreless first period that featured only one penalty, Gaul got the scoring started 4:34 into the second stanza with his sixth of the year, with assists on the tally going to senior Eric McClure (Mitchell, Ont./Thorold Blackhawks (OJHL)) and freshman Anthony Ragone (Babylon, N.Y./Springfield Pics (USPHL)). After Erik Andersson knotted the score five minutes later for Wentowrth (6-6-2), Waugh gave Manhattanville back the lead for good at the 13:59 mark with his first of the night, coming off passes from Coleman and fellow junior Paul Allan Bamberg (Lulea, Sweden/Lulea HF J20 (SWE)).

Waugh and Coleman hooked up again early in the third period while the teams skated four-on-four, scoring four seconds off the faceoff to make it a 3-1 lead 2:49 into the final frame.

The Valiants finished the game down a man thanks to a penalty with 1:35 remaining, but that worked to Waugh's advantage as he completed his hat trick with a shorthanded empty-net tally with 13 seconds left on the clock.

Senior Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) picked up his fifth win of the year by turning aside 25 of the 26 shots that came his way on the night, while WIT's Joel Miller made 26 saves on 29 shots to suffer the loss.

Manhattanville will continue its five-game road trip on Friday, when the Valiants close out their 2014-15 non-conference schedule at Williams beginning at 3 p.m.
