BIDDEFORD, Maine - In her first collegiate start, sophomore goaltender
Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) recorded 17 saves on 19 shots, backing the Valiants to a 2-2 (ot) tie against the University of New England. New England forward Shannon Smith shined on the day, scoring both goals for the Nor'Easters, while freshman teammates
Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J./Sparta High School) and
Cassandra Kent (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood) led the Valiants offensively.
With just 43 seconds remaining in the first period, Kapur scored the first goal of her Manhattanville career, beating UNE goaltender Sydney Heimbrecht for a 1-0 lead. The celebration was short-lived, however, as University of New England returned the favor when Shannon Smith scored her first goal of the game, and seventh goal of the season, with just 22 seconds remaining in the period.
After trading opportunities throughout the second period, the Valiants finally regained the lead when good puck movement between sophomore Jerin Dinkins (Grants Pass, Ore./National Sports Academy) and senior Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) led to Kent's second goal of the season. That was the last goal Heimbrecht would allow, as the sophomore goaltender would go on to record 32 saves on the 34 shots she faced.
Smith scored her second goal of the game at the 9:42 mark of the third period, tying the game at two. The teams would exchange scoring chances, including five shots on goal in overtime but neither team was able to earn the victory.
The Valiants now have two days off before heading to New London, Conn. to face-off against a Connecticut College team that is 9-3-3 on the season. The puck drops at 7:00 PM.
