Women's Hockey Pulls Off Late Comeback to Defeat Camels, 4-3

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Valiants scored three third-period goals, including the game-winner from senior forward Michelle Meggiolaro with 27.8 seconds remaining in regulation, to lift the Manhattanville College women's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Connecticut College in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

Connecticut College took the first lead of the game, scoring the only goal of the first period as Ashley Antil collected her seventh goal of the season just 6:21 into play. Senior forward Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) would even the score just over three minutes into the second period before the Camels regained the lead just 1:40 later.

After taking a 2-1 lead into the second intermission, the Camels came out and increased their lead to 3-1 when Katlyn Paiva snuck a shot past freshman goaltender Ekaterina Nikonova (Lybertcy, Russia/King's Edgehill School) just 2:31 into the the third period.

It was all Valiants from there as Meggiolaro converted on a penalty shot with 10:44 remaining to trim the visitors deficit to 3-2. Junior defenseman Melissa Hauptman (Smithtown, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) tied the game at 11:37 of the period with a wrist shot from the left point before Meggiolaro netted her second of the game with less than 30 seconds remaining in the contest to complete the comeback.

Nikonova was impressive in goal, finishing the game with 32 saves on 35 shots, backing the Valiants over a 9-3-3 Connecticut College team that was looking to break into the national rankings.

The win brings the Valiants record to 6-6-4 and sets them up nicely to take on two ECAC East opponents this weekend at Playland Ice Casino. Manhattanville faces off against Plymouth State this Friday at 7 p.m. and then against New England College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
