Valiants Tripped up by Panthers in Overtime, 4-3

RYE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville women's hockey team suffered a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday evening against fellow ECAC East opponent, Plymouth State, at Playland Ice Casino. Junior goaltender Alyssa Altschuler stole the show as she turned away 42 of the 45 Manhattanville shots, backing the Panthers to a victory.

The Valiants dominated the first period, outshooting the Panthers 17-7 in the opening frame. Despite the discrepancy, the Panthers held a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the competition as goals from Cortney Sollows and Marisa Zamrock had Plymouth State sitting pretty early in the game.

With the pressure applied by the Valiants it was only a matter of time before the team finally got on the board. With just 1:08 remaining in the first period, senior forward Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) tallied her third goal of the year, as she gathered the puck in the high slot area and ripped the puck over the blocker shoulder of Altschuler.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the second period, junior forward Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon) quickly pulled the Valiants even on a great individual effort. After lifting the stick of a Panthers defenseman, Herbert quickly turned towards goal and fired a shot upstairs, over the glove of Altschuler to even the score at two.

Despite dominating possession and scoring chances the Valiants found themselves again trailing when Plymouth State buried their third goal of the game, on just their second shot of the period, at the 9:30 mark of the second.

The Panthers would control the lead until the Valiants drew even at the 4:49 mark of the third period when sophomore Kayley Romano (Viera, Fla./Boston Shamrocks) put home the rebound of a Monika Molnar (Budapest, Hungary/Vasas HC) blast from the high slot. The goal, Romano's second of the season, would eventually send the game to overtime.

The Valiants were held to just one shot in overtime while Plymouth State managed to record five on senior netminder Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter). After making the initial save on a shot from Kelsey Lynch, the rebound landed just out of the reach out of the Valiant netminder where Olivia Leon was able to lift the puck over the sprawled-out Shaughnessy. The goal came with 52.8 seconds remaining in overtime.

The loss drops Manhattanville to 4-3-2 in ECAC East Conference play. The Valiants have another conference matchup tomorrow afternoon when they take on New England College at Playland Ice Casino.
