PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) broke a one-all tie with 11 seconds left in regulation and senior
Eric McClure (Mitchell, Ont./Thorold Blackhawks (OJHL)) added an insurance tally a mere 3.6 seconds later to lead the Manhattanville College men's hockey team to a critical 3-1 ECAC West Conference win over Elmira College on Friday night at the Murray Athletic Center.
Off a defensive zone draw with 21.6 seconds on the clock, Manhattanville (7-6-4, 2-4-1 ECAC West) very quickly escaped from its zone and got the puck up the right side to freshman
Fabian Andark (Stockholm, Sweden/Vaxjo Lakers VHL (SWE)), who carried it down the side of the ice before backhanding a puck to the front of the Elmira net. Waiting there for the game-winning tip-in was Marshall, who deflected the puck under the pads of Ryan deMelo with 11.7 seconds on the clock for this third of the year.
Then after Elmira (8-6-3, 2-3-2 ECAC West) pulled its goalie in a last-gasp effort to tie the score, McClure batted the ensuing faceoff directly into the Soaring Eagle net for a goal with 8.1 ticks remaining. The two goals are officially the second-fastest pair of goals scored by the same team in Division III history, behind two unnamed Wisconsin-Stout players scoring (supposedly) two seconds apart on January 23, 1976 versus Minnesota State Mankato. It also breaks the previous program record of seven seconds, which also came against Elmira on February 15 of last season courtesy of
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) and
Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)).
The two goals capped a gutsy comeback for the Valiants, who trailed 1-0 less than a minute into the second period before storming back with the final three goals of the game. Senior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) earned the victory by making 36 saves between the pipes for a Valiant team that was outshot by a 37-31 margin.
The two teams skated through a scoreless first period, but there were good chances for both teams. The best chance of the frame came with just over a minute remaining when Valiant sophomore
Adam Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Jr. Pics (USPHL)) took a pass while shorthanded and was slashed by David as he went in on goal. The forward could not beat DeMelo on the subsequent penalty shot, however, as the netminder made the save to keep the game scoreless.
The second period started with Elmira still up a man, and David atoned for his mistake with a power-play goal that gave the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead only 20 seconds into the frame. The score stayed that way until the 7:18 mark, when senior co-captain
Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)) evened the score with the All-American's third tally of the year off a pass from freshman
Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill./Springfield Pics (USPHL)).
Fleming came up huge after Racklin tied the score, stopping the last seven shots he faced in the second period and all 16 that came his way in the final frame.
The Valiants and Soaring Eagles will be back at the MAC again tomorrow night, as the two teams square off for the final time this regular season beginning at 7 p.m.
