RYE, N.Y. – Up by two goals early in the third period, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team was forced to settle for a 4-4 (OT) tie with Morrisville State College in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Playland Ice Casino.
The home team looked to be in good shape after sophomore assistant captain
Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)) potted his fourth goal of the year to give the Valiants a 4-2 lead 82 seconds into the final frame. But Morrisville's Jordan Carvalho got the visitors back within one at 6:55 and then Steve Dol provided the back-breaker with an extra-attacker tally in the final minute to knot the score.
The result may have worse if not for the good play of senior netminder
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)), who made 29 big saves – including 10 in the third period and three in overtime – to allow the Valiants to salvage a point from the contest. Senior assistant captain
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) led Manhattanville (5-5-3) at the other end with a goal and an assist, while Waugh and freshmen
Fabian Andark (Stockholm, Sweden/Vaxjo Lakers VHL (SWE)) and
Anthony Ragone (Babylon, N.Y./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) also scored for the home team.
Mooney got Manhattanville on the board first with 5:41 remaining in the first period when he batted home the rebound of a shot from sophomore
Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)). That was the only goal of the frame despite a combined 29 shots from the two teams, with the home team posting a 19-10 edge in attempts on target over the first 20 minutes.
The Valiant lead doubled 6:47 into the middle frame thanks to the first collegiate goal of Andark, who walked in from the sideboards and fired a wrist shot under the arm of goalie Steven Dombrowsky. Assists on the score went to sophomore
Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) and freshman
Charlie Ryde (Stockholm, Sweden/Fleminbsbergs IK J20 (SWE)), who was making his collegiate debut for the Valiants.
After Carvalho scored his first of the night at 12:24, Ragone responded just over a minute later to regain the two-goal advantage, firing a slapper from the right point that eluded Dombrowsky's glove at the 13:28 mark.
Morrisville (4-5-4) again got back within a goal late in the second period on Zach Baker's fourth goal of the year at 18:01. But again Manhattanville was able to respond early in the third period, as Waugh intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and walked in on the Mustang cage to net his fourth goal of the season, giving the home team a seemingly comfortable two-goal lead that was not to be.
Manhattanville finished the night with a 39-33 edge in shots. Neither team found much success on the power play, as the Mustangs were held scoreless on four chances while the Valiants did not score on two man-up chances.
The Valiants will spend the next three weeks on the road, beginning with a Sunday trip up to Wentworth for a 5:30 p.m. meeting with the Leopards.
