PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team was unable to put together any offensive momentum against Misericordia University Saturday afternoon, dropping a MAC Freedom matchup 3-0.
The Valiants (5-8 overall, 0-3 MAC Freedom) were able to get just two shots on goal the entire afternoon, being shut down by the defense of Misericordia (3-9 overall, 1-2 MAC Freedom). The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure the entire afternoon, possessing the ball in the attacking end of the field for the majority of the game.
Manhattanville fell behind early in the contest, when a Cougar shot went through the legs of sophomore goalkeeper
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), and was tipped into the open cage by Kailey Vogl. Four minutes later the Cougars struck again, this time with Lindsay Hischak and Jennifer O'Neill breaking away on a two-on-one situation. O'Neill found Hischak at the top of the circle, and the senior was able to take a touch around Halloran and give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage which they would carry into the break.
At the start of the second half, junior goalkeeper
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) replaced Halloran, and faced a busy second half of action in cage. Misericordia earned ten penalty corners in the half, firing ten shots, eight of those on goal. Hughes was able to fight off a barrage of attacks on several occasions, allowing just one goal on a well-drawn up penalty corner from the Cougars.
With the loss Manhattanville drops to 0-3 in conference play, making the final four MAC Freedom matchups extremely important if they want to make a run at a postseason berth.
The Valiants will get a break from MAC Freedom action, taking on Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00 P.M.
