Field Hockey Drops Fifth Straight in 1-0 Loss to Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, CONN. – Despite numerous opportunities, the Manhattanville Field Hockey team was unable to net a goal and fell to Western Connecticut State 1-0 on Wednesday night at The Westside Athletic Complex in nonconference play.

The Valiants recorded 16 shots with 12 of the shots going on net but junior goalkeeper Kristy Trotta for the Colonials shutout Manhattanville (5-9) and recorded her fourth shutout of the season while accounting for 11 saves in the win.

Western Connecticut State (5-8) scored the game's only goal at the 23:24 mark in the first half when junior Brianna Reda scored her first goal of the season off a pass from senior Jenny Cappello. The goal came off a Kristy Matasavage corner from the left side.

Junior defender Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) led all players with eight shots and five shots on net while freshman Nicole Fanelle (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) accounted for five shots and four shots on goal. Seniors Breanna O'Neill (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) and Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) along with sophomore Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) each had a shot on goal.

Sophomore keeper Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) stopped four of the five shots she faced for the Valiants in the loss.

Manhattanville, currently on a five-game skid, will look to get back on track and look for its first conference win on Friday when the Valiants travel to King's (Pa.) for a big MAC Freedom match before hosting the "Play 4 The Cure" Cancer Awareness Game at GoValiants.com Field on Sunday against Connecticut College at 4 p.m.
