PURCHASE, N.Y. – 110 minutes of action was not enough, as the Manhattanville College men's soccer team battled DeSales University to a 0-0 draw Wednesday afternoon in a MAC Freedom matchup.
The Valiants (6-5-3 overall, 0-1-2 MAC Freedom) picked up their second point in conference play with their third draw of the season on a day where both defenses were impressive.
The Manhattanville defense was once again impressive, holding DeSales (5-8-1 overall, 0-2-1 MAC Freedom) to just four shots on goal on the afternoon. The Valiants were unable to convert on their opportunities on the offensive end, including several late in the game and overtime to put the game away.
Late in regulation, senior
Kevin O'Reilly (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) delivered a beautiful ball into the box and found the head of senior
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who delivered a shot just wide of the target. In the second overtime period, freshman
Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) gathered a bouncing ball and split the Bulldog defense for a one-on-one opportunity with DeSales goalkeeper Dan Sulpizio, but the charging keeper forced Martinsson's shot again just wide of the net.
The Valiants had one of their best chances in the 109th minute when a loose ball found its way to junior
Jesper Hjalm (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddingegymnasiet) just outside of the box. Hjalm fired a rocket that appeared to be heading into the top left corner, but was turned away on a great diving save from Sulpizio to keep the game scoreless.
Valiant senior goalkeeper
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) was impressive in goal once again for Manhattanville. Silber recorded four saves on the afternoon en route to his third shutout of the season. With the performance the senior lowered his goals against average to below 1 goal per game for the second time this season.
Manhattanville returns to action on Saturday, October 17th when they travel to Pennsylvania for a MAC Freedom matchup against Misericordia University. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
