DALLAS, Pa. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team recorded its second consecutive shutout, but was unable to get any offense going against Misericordia University, leading to the team's third consecutive draw against a conference opponent.
The Valiants (6-5-4 overall, 0-1-3 MAC Freedom) managed just three shots on goal on the afternoon, unable to capitalize on opportunities on the offensive end. Sophomore
Jefferson Santos (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) was turned away in the first half on a nice save from Cougar goalkeeper Matt Smith. Manhattanville was able to find freshman
Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) twice in overtime behind the defense, but the Swede was unable to find the back of the net.
Misericordia (6-5-2 overall, 2-1-1 MAC Freedom) applied a steady dose of pressure on the attacking end, but the Valiant defense was once again able to step up and hold the Cougars to just six shots on target for the afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) made five saves on the day, leading to his fourth shutout of the season. Silber, along with the back line, will look to keep doing its part to lead the Valiants to the postseason.
"I give our players credit for their toughness again today. We've kept a clean sheet again today for the second time against a very tough opponent," said head Coach
Gregg Miller. "I feel that if we continue to show the same resilience in games as we have in the last three, we will start to score the goals we need. We have been incredibly unfortunate with injuries this year. Thankfully a few guys are getting back healthy again and I am confident that we will get the goals."
A win Saturday would have moved Manhattanville into fourth place in the MAC Freedom. Instead the Valiants find themselves four points behind the Cougars for the final playoff position, making the final three regular season games extremely important as the team makes its final push to earn a postseason berth.
The Valiants return home on Tuesday as they play host to FDU-Florham at 3:30 P.M.
