Schaufele's Goal Ends Valiant Scoring Drought, Leads Men's Soccer Past FDU-Florham

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) scored in the 62nd minute to end a 394-minute scoring drought to lead the Manhattanville College men's soccer team past FDU-Florham, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon in a key MAC Freedom matchup at GoValiants.com Field.

After recording three consecutive draws against MAC Freedom opponents, Manhattanville (7-5-4 overall, 1-1-3 MAC Freedom) found the back of the net for the first time since the 8th minute of their matchup against King's College (Pa.).   The lone goal was enough to lead the team past FDU-Florham (7-7-1 overall, 3-2 MAC Freedom), as the defense was able to record their third consecutive shutout against a conference opponent.

The Valiants were able to strike early in the second half, when Schaufele found a wide open Jefferson Santos (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) on the left wing.  Devil goalkeeper Nick Mihalik kept out Santos' shot, but the rebound found its way to Schaufele, who fired a shot through three Devil defenders for his fourth goal of the season.

The defense stepped up and shut down the FDU attack the rest of the way.  Senior goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) made five saves on the afternoon to record his fifth shutout of the season and third in a row.

With the win, the Valiants keep their playoff hopes alive, earning their first win in MAC Freedom play and picking up a crucial three points in the standings.  Manhattanville faces Delaware Valley University and Wilkes University to finish out the season, and will need to keep up their solid play to put themselves in a position for a postseason run.

"It keeps us in the mix; the significance of the game is much less now than it was before hand," said head coach Gregg Miller regarding the win.  "We still need to prepare well and win those two games.  This should build the guys' confidence, and make them feel good going into the games.  They will feel good now knowing they can win these games."

The Valiants will travel to Delaware Valley on Saturday for a MAC Freedom matchup.  Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
