Primavera's 25 Kills Propel Women's Volleyball to Another Tri-Match Sweep

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Junior Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team with 25 kills and moved into second place in program history in career kills as the Valiants swept their fourth tri-match of the season with 3-0 victories over Maritime (N.Y.) College and New Jersey City University at the NCJU Tri-Match, held on Saturday.

Primavera had a good day offensively and defensively for the Valiants, combining for 25 kills on .286 hitting in addition to a team-best 25 digs as well. She also finished the day with 838 career kills, moving her past Rebecca Magnuson '02 for second place all-time at the school, just 25 behind the school record of 863 set by former teammate Susy Camaj '14.

Sophomores Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) also added 18 and 13 kills, respectively, and both doing so with .333 hitting percentages. Junior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) led Manhattanville with 63 assists in addition to 17 digs and four kills, while freshman Andrea Baez-Berrios (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Cupeyville School) chipped on a team-leading eight service aces and 10 digs. Sophomore Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) also registered 14 kills and junior Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) added 20 digs as the Valiants dominated the day against the Privateers and Gothic Knights.

Manhattanville made quick work of Maritime in the first match of the day, hitting .344 as a team in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-15) victory.

Dattoma led the squad with 10 kills on 22 errorless attacks (.455 hitting), followed by Primavera with nine kills and a match-high 16 digs. Baez-Berrios also performed well from the service line with six aces to go with seven digs.

Manhattanville took control of the first set early, winning 10 straight points on the serve of Baez-Berrios to jump out to a 17-3 lead. The second set saw the Valiants make multiple runs, recording four different runs of at least five straight points to create some separation. In the third set, the squad started the frame with an 8-1 run and never looked back in completing the sweep.

The Valiants had to work a little harder against the host Gothic Knights, but still put away NJCU in straight sets in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) win.

Primavera just missed a double-double in the victory, putting down a match-high 16 kills and adding nine digs. Quinabo did achieve the double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs, while junior Samantha Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) pitched in with 10 digs and one kill.

The first set was even to start, featuring four ties and one lead change. The last tie came at 13-all before Primavera put down a kill and Quinabo followed with seven straight points on her serve, with Primavera (four kills) and Reid (two kills) providing the offense. NJCU battled back to get within three at 22-19, but a kill from junior Emma Banevicius (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) ended NJCU's 6-1 run and Dattoma finished things off with a kill of her own.

The third set was the most even of the match with eight ties and four lead changes, but the visitors still managed to pull out the win. NJCU held a 14-13 lead before a Banevicius kill knotted the score and started a 10-2 run that put away the Knights and completed the sweep.

Manhattanville (14-8) will look for a second straight MAC Freedom victory on Tuesday night, when the team travels to Pennsylvania for a 7 p.m. meeting with King's (Pa.) College.
