Primavera Breaks Career Kills Record as Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match

PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was a historical day for the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team on Saturday, as junior Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) became Manhattanville's all-time kills leader to pace the Valiants in a sweep of both Sarah Lawrence and Rutgers-Newark at the team's second home tri-match of the season at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Primavera became the all-time kills leader in Manhattanville history in the first game against Sarah Lawrence. Entering the day five kills away from the program's all-time record, Primavera needed less than one full set to accomplish that feat, putting down the 864th kill of her three-year career to break a tie with former teammate Susy Camaj '14 for first place all-time at Manhattanville.

"I'm really happy but none of it could have been done without my teammates," stated Primavera.

In the first match, the Valiants cruised to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-12) win over the Gryphons. The key to the win was Manhattanville's ability to go on runs. In the first set, the Valiants went on 13-0 run to take a commanding 19-4 lead. Then in set number two the Valiants turned a 3-0 deficit into an 18-point lead when the Valiants scored 22 of the next 23 points.

Manhattanville was led by Primavera with seven kills and four aces. Sophomore Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) also recorded seven kills while sophomore Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had six kills and freshman Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) accounted for five kills. Primavera along with classmates Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) and Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) each had a team-high five digs and Quinabo led the Valiants with 23 assists.

"The girls did a really good job of adjusting," commented head coach Amanda Alayon. "I threw a lot of different lineups in there and gave some other girls some court time in preparation for Wilkes."

In the final match of the day, the Valiants swept away the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark, 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 26-24). In set number one with the score tied at nine, Manhattanville ended the set on a 16-1 run to earn the win. The Raiders would not go away as they went toe-to-toe with the Valiants in the second set. Trailing 22-20, Manhattanville scored five of the next six points to take the second set thanks to three big kills from Primavera, Reid, and sophomore Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King).

The third set was a back-and-forth clash and again Rutgers-Newark had a late lead, earning a set point up 24-23. However, Quinabo picked up a huge kill on a quick attack at the net that caught the Raiders off guard. Following an attack error, Primavera ended the match with a kill and sealed the win for the Valiants.

It was a fitting ending for a historical day as the junior outside hitter recorded a double-double with a game-high 19 kills and 14 digs. Reid and Dattoma each added eight kills apiece while Mackey had five. Quinabo recorded a double-double as well with 13 digs and 41 assists. Alves led the Valiants with 19 digs.

"They were good defensively and very scrappy but we did well under pressure and we were better offensively," added Primavera.

Rutgers-Newark (11-14) was led by freshman Jess Moy with eight kills and sophomores Sue Riley had 19 digs while Nathalie Breining recorded a team-high 17 assists. The Scarlet Raiders were victorious in the second game against Sarah Lawrence in three sets (25-9, 25-15, 25-9).

Primavera ended the day with 885 kills, with one more match this season and all of next year to increase her record total. In six sets today, Primavera put down 26 kills on .390 hitting  and also chipped in 19 digs and a team-high five service aces. Reid and Dattoma added 15 and 14 kills, respectively, with Reid also recording six blocks (two solo, four assist). Quinabo picked up 64 assists and 18 digs, while Alves led the Valiants with 24 digs in the two matches.

The Valiants will wrap up the 2015 season with a home match against conference foe Wilkes on Wednesday at Kennedy Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

"We have two practices to prepare for Wilkes and scout them out," said Alayon. "I think this is a nice start for us to have a nice week and everything should look smooth."

"We have nothing to lose," concluded Primavera. "We have to leave our hearts on the court and play 100 percent."
