Field Hockey Falls Short In Offensive Battle Against Delaware Valley

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team fell in a high-scoring matchup against MAC Freedom foe Delaware Valley College Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-3.

Delaware Valley (5-5 overall, 1-1 MAC Freedom) jumped out ahead in the first half, when Carlie Baldus dribbled into the circle and fired a shot through traffic that beat junior goalkeeper Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.  They would build on that lead when Timera Brooks-Watts tipped in a pass from Taylor Prichett to give Delaware Valley a 2-0 advantage.

Manhattanville (5-7 overall, 0-2 MAC Freedom) answered late in the half, when they earned a penalty stroke after a Delaware Valley defender kicked out a shot along the goal line.  Senior Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) beat goalkeeper Emily Aldridge to cut the deficit to one.

In the 33rd minute, junior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) had a great opportunity to tie the game, but her shot rattled off the left post and stayed out of the cage.  The Valiants were able to capitalize just two minutes later, when freshman Nicole Fanelle (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) was able to deflect a ball from Smits over Aldridge to tie the game 2-2.

Delaware Valley earned a penalty corner as time expired in the first half, and was able to find the back of the cage to give them a 3-2 advantage entering the break.

In the second half, the Aggies expanded their lead when Kara Imes found the back of the cage off of a penalty corner, which proved to be the deciding factor in the game.  Manhattanville was 0-11 on penalty corners on the afternoon, while Delaware Valley was 2-2.

The Valiants cut back into the deficit in the 56th minute, when Fanelle tallied her second goal, burying a rebound into the back of the cage to make it 4-3.  Manhattanville had some chances late in the game, but were unable to find the back of the cage, falling by the final of 4-3.

Manhattanville returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference matchup.
