Men's Soccer Trounces Medgar Evers 7-1

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Manhattanville College men's soccer team exploded for seven goals behind multi-goal games from senior Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and junior Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) en route to a 7-1 victory over Medgar Evers Monday night.

The Valiants (6-4-1 overall) got off to a fast start Monday night, netting their first goal in the 15th minute when Singson headed home a cross from senior Kevin O'Reilly (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) to put Manhattanville on top. Just two minutes later freshman Michael Jean-Charles (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon High School) scored his first collegiate goal, heading home a cross from senior Jesper Hjalm (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddingegymnasiet).

Manhattanville tacked on three more goals before the end of the first half. In the 30th minute, Singson found the back of the net for his second goal on an assist from freshman Hugo Landberg (Stockholm, Sweden/The Aquinas Institute of Rochester). Junior Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) netted his first goal of the night five minutes later, putting home a cross from Hjalm. In the 37th minute, the Cougars (2-9 overall) were handed a foul in the penalty box, allowing O'Reilly to step up and bury his first goal on the season on the ensuing penalty shot.

Medgar Evers got on the board early in the second half when Lorenz Pierre-Louis floated a ball over senior goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East)'s head. The Valiants responded again two minutes later when Parra buried his second goal of the evening on an assist from freshman Abtin Aram (Stockholm, Sweden/Young Business Creatives). Landberg tacked on a goal of his own near the end of the game when Martinsson found him on a two-on-one breakaway to round out the Valiant scoring.

"Tonight was a good opportunity to get some experience for some of our younger players," said head coach Gregg Miller.

The team will have to focus on the next game quickly, as they play host to regionally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. "We now have less than 48 hours to get ready to play a very talented Stevens team," said Miller.

The Valiants will look to keep up their impressive play in that matchup, having come off of a shutout victory against regionally ranked United States Merchant Marine Academy, and suffering a tough loss on a late minute free-kick to nationally ranked Eastern University Saturday. Gametime for the matchup against Stevens is set for 3:00 P.M. at GoValiants.com Field.
