Big First Half Run Propels Men's Basketball to First Win of the Season over Elizabethtown

LANCASTER, PA. – A big first half run helped propel the Manhattanville College Men's Basketball team to an 89-83 victory over Elizabethtown College in the consolation game of the Lancaster Rotary F&M Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday hosted by Franklin and Marshall College.

"I thought we came out with good energy and cohesiveness," stated head coach Pat Scanlon. "We had some guys step up and help us hold on."

With the Valiants leading 18-16 seven minutes into the game, Manhattanville went on an impressive 22-3 run in a 10 minute span to take a commanding lead.

Manhattanville (1-1) went into halftime leading by 17 thanks in large part to the spectacular play of senior guard Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) who netted 22 of the Valiants' 57 points.

The Blue Jays were able to rally in the second half but the hole was too deep for Elizabethtown (0-2) to climb out of as the Valiants picked up their first win of the season.

Manhattanville shot over 40 percent from the field for the second straight game and 38 percent from behind the arc as the Valiants never trailed in the contest.

Elizabethtown was led by junior Josh Eden with 24 points and junior Matt Lapkowicz added 16 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Maestre ended up tying a career-high with 29 points and hauled in five boards to lead the Valiants. Sophomore Alex Tuci (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while fellow classmate Chris Ayson (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) netted a career-high 13 points and senior Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) scored 10 points.

Manhattanville will be back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Valiants welcome Union College to Kennedy Gymnasium for their home opener.
