NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) became the fifth Manhattanville College player to reach 300 career assists as the Valiants matched the best ten-game start in program history with a 69-46 victory over Hunter College in their final game of 2015 on Wednesday evening.
Pabon was once again a leader on the court for Manhattanville (8-2 overall), scoring 16 points to go along with three assists and five steals to help the Valiants to the record start. The team became the sixth team in school history to win eight of their first ten games. This previous record should bode well for this year's squad, as every team to reach the feat in the past has gone on to win at least their next two games, and have gone on to reach the postseason in each of those years.
After battling Hunter (4-6 overall) for most of the first quarter, the Valiants built a five-point lead in the final minutes of the period to take a 17-12 lead into the first intermission. The Valiants used that momentum in the second, outscoring Hunter 14-7 as they headed into halftime with a 12-point lead.
Manhattanville never looked back in the second half, using a 26-point outburst in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for good.
Sophomore
Candice Scott-Mason (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) scored a season-high 16 points in the win to go along with three steals as the Valiants forced 23 Hunter turnovers on the night. Classmate
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) hauled in a team-high seven rebounds, while freshman
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was solid off the bench, scoring eleven points in 16 minutes of action.
The Valiants have a short break before returning to the court this weekend when they travel to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference matchup on January 2. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
