Fleming's 37 Saves Not Enough in Overtime Loss to #15 Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart College forward Brad Robbins scored the only goal of the game 1:51 into overtime as the Statesmen, ranked 15th in Division III according to the latest D3hockey.com National Poll, escaped with a 1-0 (OT) victory over Manhattanville College in ECAC West Conference men's hockey action on Friday night at the Geneva Recreation Center.

After senior Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) had a great game stopping the first 37 shots that came his way for Manhattanville (7-11-5, 2-9-2 ECAC West), Robbins was able to find the net for the eighth time this season less than two minutes into the overtime period for the game's first and only tally. The senior has now amassed 121 saves against Hobart in three career games in Geneva after tonight.

Both teams had power-play chances in the first period thanks to five penalties, but neither side managed to provide much of an offensive threat. After the first three man-up chances resulted in no shots for either side, both Fleming and Hobart's Frank Oplinger made three stops on the opposition's power play later in the first period to keep the game scoreless. Hobart finished the first period with a slight 12-11 edge in shots.

The second period provided more of the same, as the teams went scoreless yet again. Fleming turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the middle period as the Valiants successfully killed off a pair of man-down situations. As a result, Manhattanville went into the decisive third period still knotted up for the 11th time in its 23 games this season.

The visitors had three power-play chances in the third period but could not find the back of the net, as the team managed only six shots on goal compared to 11 for the home team. Both teams took one shot in overtime before Robbins' game-winner.

Hobart (17-6-0, 10-3-0 ECAC West) finished the game out-shooting Manhattanville by a 38-26 margin. The Valiants could not take advantage of six man-up opportunities on the night, while also holding the Statesmen scoreless on four man-up chances.

Manhattanville and Hobart will finish their weekend series tomorrow afternoon, as the two teams take to the ice at the Geneva Recreation Center again beginning at 4 p.m.
