Delahanty’s Walk-Off Grand Slam Lifts Valiants To Series Split Against Plattsburgh State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Manhattanville baseball team and Plattsburgh State combined for 62 runs, 59 hits and nine home runs on Sunday with both teams winning a game on a walk-off home run, including a walk-off grand slam from sophomore John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) in game two for the Valiants.

Manhattanville (1-1) and Plattsburgh State (3-3) played for more than eight hours yesterday before splitting the double header, as the Cardinals won the first game 16-15 in 11 innings while the Valiants took game two also by a final score of 16-15.

For the Valiants, sophomore Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) had an unbelievable day at the plate, going 5-10 at the dish with nine RBI and five runs scored, including two two-run home runs. With the potent Valiant offense, Manhattanville struggled to silence Plattsburgh State at the plate, resulting in two 16-15 finishes.

In game one, Manhattanville jumped out of the gate early as sophomore Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) started off the first inning with a two-run home run, scoring senior Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep). The Cardinals came right back in the bottom half, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead into second inning. No lead was safe for the remainder of the day as senior Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) notched the game up at three in the second with a solo home run. With the game tied at three, the Valiants put together a three-run third inning, taking a 6-4 lead into the fourth inning. Manhattanville was not done there as the Valiants had another big inning in the seventh. The Valiants scored seven runs in the seventh inning, taking a commanding 13-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

With a nine-run lead, the Valiants eventually saw that lead slip away as the Cardinals scored three runs in seventh inning, chipping away their deficit to six, 13-7. Plattsburgh State added two additional runs in the eighth inning, making it 13-11 in favor of the Valiants. Conklin connected on a sacrifice fly in the ninth to extend the Valiant lead to three, 14-11. Despite a three-run deficit headed into the final half of the ninth, the Cardinals were persistent in making a comeback. Plattsburgh utilized an RBI double and two-run single to tie the game up at 14 before both teams headed into extra innings. The Valiants took back their lead in the 11th inning on a wild pitch before the Cardinals eventually won the game on a walk-off two-run home run from Mike Vargues.

The Valiants looked for revenge in game two after a wild game one finish, starting off the second game with a two-run home run from Lynch in the first inning. Like game one, the Cardinals battled back early, scoring four runs, taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom half of the third. Manhattanville put together a four-run third inning that included a two-run double from Guerra, as the Valiants took a 6-4 lead. Lynch continued his strong offensive effort in the next inning, belting his second two-run home run of the game, giving the Valiants an 8-4 lead. The Cardinals put together a strong fifth inning, scoring six runs, taking a 10-8 lead. Manhattanville came right back in the bottom half, scoring three runs, including a two-run single from Lynch. Plattsburgh State utilized a solid final seventh inning to secure a 15-11 lead before the Valiants unleashed in their last at bat. After an RBI single from sophomore Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland), the bases were left loaded for Delahanty as the Valiants trailed by three, 15-12. Delahanty stepped up to the plate and delivered in clutch fashion, smoking a walk-off grand slam, giving the Valiants their first win of the 2015 season by a final score of 16-15.

Manhattanville is scheduled to take on Grove City today for a double header with the first game starting at noon. Live tweets will be available via @MVilleValiants.
