NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team moved back to .500 on the season, following Wednesday's 8-7 comeback victory over Mount Saint Mary College. Leading the way for the Valiants were sophomores
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield), scoring a combined seven goals between the two of them, including the game winner.
Things didn't start out ideally for the Valiants; Mount Saint Mary scored the first two goals of the game, both on man-up opportunities. Trailing 2-0, it wasn't until just 2:08 remaining in the first quarter when Murray scored his first of the night, unassisted.
After the Knights regained the two-goal lead, Murray struck again with just 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Despite the two teams registering 11 shots in the second quarter, Motherway scored the lone goal of the frame, coming off an assist from fellow sophomore
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
In what turned out to be a wild second half, Murray completed his hat trick just 2:37 into the third quarter. Joseph Rizotti sniped one past sophomore goaltender
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) at the 10:31 mark, knotting the game at 4-4.
In the final 5:16 of the third quarter, six goals were scored. The Knights scored the first three straight goals in a span of 1:42, earning a 7-4 lead with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter.
It was all Manhattanville from there.
Freshman
Christian Flores (Avon, Conn./Avon) scored his first collegiate goal just 17 seconds after Mount Saint Mary increased their lead to three. Just over a minute later, Murray buried his fourth of the game. Then, only 53 seconds after Murray's goal, Motherway added his second of the contest, tying the game 7-7, before heading into the fourth quarter.
After the flurry of goals scored to close the third quarter, only one goal was scored in the fourth. Just 59 seconds into the frame, Motherway completed his hat trick, giving the Valiants an 8-7 lead that they would not relinquish.
Hoffman had another strong game in goal for the Valiants, making eight saves to earn the win.
The team next travels to Worcester, Mass. for a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon face off against Clark University. The Valiants will look to hand the Cougars their third straight loss after the team started the season 3-0.
