WEST HARRISON, N.Y.- Backed by stellar performances from senior
Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) and sophomore
Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) on Sunday afternoon, the Manhattanville baseball team cruised past King's (Pa.) in Freedom Conference play, winning game one by a final score of 14-3 before picking up a 5-0 game two victory.
Manhattanville (7-4, 3-0 Freedom) outscored King's (Pa.) (2-8, 0-2 Freedom) by a total of 19-3, combining for 19 total hits, delivering both Palmeri and Healy their second win of the season. Palmeri started game one, allowing one run in six innings of work while Healy pitched a complete-game shutout in game two for the Valiants.
At the plate, sophomores
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) combined for seven RBIs, including a two-run home run from Conklin in game one. Senior
Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) also registered his 100th RBI as a member of the Manhattanville baseball program, coming in the first inning of game one.
The Valiants got things started early in game one, opening up the first inning with eight runs. As Guerra stole second, junior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) made his way home, scoring the first run of the afternoon. From there on out, it was all Valiants. Manhattanville took advantage of early walks from King's starter Ryan Gimbi, batting around the order to rattle off seven more runs after the first inning. With an 8-0 lead headed into the second inning, the Valiants scored five more runs with the help of a two-run single from junior
Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and a two-run home run from Conklin.
Palmeri utilized a 13-0 lead after two innings to feel comfortable on the mound. The senior continued to shut down the Monarchs, allowing only four hits in 24 at bats. Sophomore
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) added one more run in the fifth on a homer to left before the Valiants picked up a 14-3 game-one win.
In game two, Healy was the overall difference maker, pitching a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits while striking out four. Both teams were held quiet for the first three innings before the Valiants broke through in the fourth against Monarchs' starter Mike Krieger. Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) getting hit by a pitch put the Valiants up 2-0. Senior
Jeff Moskowitz (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) drove in the final run of the fourth on a sacrifice fly as Manhattanville held a 3-0 lead after the inning. Conklin added an RBI single in the fifth inning followed by a wild pitch put the Valiants up five with Healy dealing on the mound. The sophomore was able to shut down the Monarchs for the remainder of the game, helping the Valiants remain perfect in Freedom Conference play with a 5-0 shutout win.
