Hewett’s Hot Hand Helps Valiants To Freedom Split With #13 Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa.- Senior T.J. Hewett (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) helped the Manhattanville baseball team to a split with #13/26 Misericordia on Saturday afternoon, keeping the Cougars scoreless in 4 2/3 innings of relief work for a 6-2 game two win after falling by a final score of 12-2 in game one.

Hewett entered on the mound for Manhattanville (20-15, 13-7 Freedom) with the bases loaded in the third inning of game two, holding Misericordia (24-8, 13-5 Freedom) scoreless for the remainder of the contest to pick up his first win of the season. The senior slinger only allowed three hits, helping the Valiants take two out of three games against the Cougars.

At the plate, sophomore Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) tallied two hits, including a two-run home run to go with three runs scored in game two while senior Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) brought in two RBIs in each game. Misericordia starter Cory Vogeli got the best of the Valiants in game one, tossing six strong innings, allowing two runs on four total hits. Freshman Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits to take the loss.

The Cougars jumped out early on LoFaro in game one, putting up three runs in the first inning that included a two-run triple from Alec Iurato. Brady cut the deficit to two in the second inning after knocking in classmate Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) on an RBI single to center field. Misericordia scored two more runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead headed into the fourth. Brady brought home the second run on an error from Vogeli, but it would eventually be the final run for Manhattanville in game one. The Cougars scored at least a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take game one by a final score of 12-2.

Anselmi made the start on the mound for the Valiants in game two, throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits before exiting with a bases-loaded jam. Hewett was able to shut down Misericordia for the remainder of the contest as the Valiants took advantage of Garrett Pelko and Kyle Rogalski.

Brady gave the Valiants a 1-0 lead in the second inning, scoring Anselmi on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Cougars eventually took a 2-1 lead after the third inning, tying the game in the second on a run coming off a double play, which was eventually followed by a sacrifice fly in the third. Despite not having a hit in game two, Brady tied the game up in the fourth on a fielder's choice to make it 2-2. Anselmi gave the Valiants a 3-2 lead in the fifth by reaching base on an error at third. Nunez knocked in the next run the following inning on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to two. Although Anselmi did not get the win on the mound, the sophomore added another insurance run in the seventh by jacking a two-run homer to left field. With Hewett dealing on the mound, Manhattanville earned a 6-2 game two win.

The Valiants will honor their 10 seniors tomorrow when they play John Jay for a double header set to start at noon. Live stats can be accessed via GoValiants.com.
