PURCHASE, N.Y.- The 10 seniors of the Manhattanville baseball program stole the show on Sunday afternoon, defeating John Jay in a non-conference double header, beating the Bloodhounds in game one by a final score of 14-4 before winning game two 1-0 after a walk off in the final inning of Senior Day at Manhattanville Field.
Â
Seniors
Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and
Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) each pitched a complete game to earn a win for Manhattanville (22-15) while their classmates combined for 15 hits, six RBIs and eight runs against John Jay (2-25). Senior
Jeff Moskowitz (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) had a stellar day at the plate, stroking five hits, tallying two hits and two RBIs. Classmates
Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) and
Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) both had three hits in game one to help the Valiants cruise to a 10-run win.
Â
Lyon made the start in game one, tossing seven strong innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. With the win, Lyon moves into seventh all-time at Manhattanville with 14 career wins, placing him three wins behind the top spot shared by Alex Seminara '05 and former teammate
Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) '13. Despite giving up an early run to the Bloodhounds in the first, Lyon settled in as the Valiant bats started to pop. Guerra eventually tied the game up in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single as the Valiants then took a 2-1 lead the following inning on an RBI single from freshman
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./Iona Prep).
Â
With a 2-1 lead after two innings of play, Lyon starting mowing down batters left and right, retiring the side in order for the next three innings. In the fourth, Moskowitz connected on an RBI double down the left field line to score Euvino, making it 3-1. An RBI single from Lynch in the fifth gave the Valiants a 4-1 lead, but the Bloodhounds were able to chip away at their deficit in the sixth, scoring two runs to pull within one. Both runs off Lyon came unearned, but nonetheless it was still a one-run game.
Â
The Valiants put together a monster sixth inning, batting around to score 10 runs to take a 14-3 lead. Manhattanville took advantage of Bloodhound miscues in the inning, starting with Moskowitz coming across home after an error at shortstop. Campana eventually made his way home on a wild pitch before the offense really came alive. An RBI single from Lynch was followed by an RBI double from Guerra and an RBI single from both senior
Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) as well as Moskowitz. Like his first at bat of the inning, Campana again brought home a run while reaching base on an error. Despite being the all-time saves leader in Manhattanville history, senior
Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) put in work on a sixth inning at bat, lacing a single up the middle to give the Valiants a 12-3 lead. Sophomore
Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) brought in the next run with an RBI double before coming home for the final Manhatanville run on a wild pitch.
Â
The Bloodhounds were able to get one run back in the seventh, but it did not take much longer for Lyon to close the door, picking up the 14th win of his career with the 14-4 game one victory.
Â
Zareva was lights out on the mound for the Valiants in game two, throwing seven shutout innings to help the Valiants to a 1-0 win that came on a walk off in the final inning. The senior southpaw struck out nine batters through seven innings of work, holding the Bloodhounds scoreless on six hits. For John Jay, David Schildwachter had a solid showing on the mound, throwing 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on 10 hits. The only run of the game came off a wild pitch from Schildwachter in the final inning that scored freshman
Michael Perrone (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas).
