WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- Sophomores
Anthony Iannuzzi (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and
Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) each tallied three hits against King's (Pa.) on Monday afternoon, helping the Valiants to a 6-3 victory over the Monarchs in their Freedom Conference regular season finale.
Sophomore
Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) earned his team-best sixth win of the year for Manhattanville (23-15, 14-7 Freedom), pitching seven strong innings against King's (Pa.) (9-20, 4-14 Freedom). The Valiants connected for 15 hits on Monday, as the sophomore class combined for 10 of those hits.
Iannuzzi and Booker both finished with three hits apiece, while adding three runs and an RBI in the Valiant victory. Sophomore
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Senior
Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) finished with two hits each, helping Manhattanville to its 14th Freedom Conference victory. Healy allowed all three runs in seven innings of work, striking out six batters before freshman
William Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) entered in relief, picking up the save after tossing two shutout innings.
The Valiants opened up the scoring early as Lynch connected on an RBI single down the left field line to score Brady. Junior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) eventually came home to score in the third inning to make it 2-0. With Healy dealing on the mound for majority of the game, the Valiants brought home two more runs in the fourth as freshman
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) scored Booker on a sacrifice fly, which was followed by an RBI single from classmate
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./Iona Prep).
With a 4-0 lead headed into the fifth, the Monarchs were finally able to get on the scoreboard, coming off an RBI groundout from Joe Zito. The Valiants got that run back in the sixth inning, as Nunez reached first on an error at shortstop to score Brady for his second run of the game. Iannuzzi added the sixth Manhattanville run after lacing an RBI double to left field, scoring Book to make it 6-1 in favor of the Valiants. The Monarchs found some life in the bottom half of the seventh, starting with an RBI double from Tom Gibbons. A wild pitch from Healy allowed Zack Godfrey to score, making it 6-3 after seven.
Tempone shut down the Monarchs in his two innings of work, giving up two hits while tossing shutout baseball to pick up his first save of the season. The 6-3 win for the Valiants concludes Freedom Conference regular season play. Manhattanville will be a #3 seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament that starts on May 7th.
